If you have a movie and cant seem to get it to play, odds are you have a conflicting or missing codec. A CODEC (compressor/decompressor) allows you to play movies and such. To find out exactly what codecs are required to watch your movie, you can use one or both of two excellent little utilities: AVICodec and Gspot. Both AVICodec and GSpot can be used to determine the codecs required for a movie to play. AVICodec, despite its name has better MPEG capabilities and thus is reccomended for MPEG files (such as those for (S)VCDs). GSpot on the otherhand is far more efficient for scanning AVI files. Both programs offer unique features also, AVICodec allows you to queue up and entire folder to for checking in addition to providing direct links to sites where codecs can be downloaded; GSpot allows for 'rendering' of files (to check to see if the system can actually play the file with the available codecs and to check for fakes. AVICodec can be downloaded from http://avicodec.duby.info/ and GSpot can be downloaded from http://www.headbands.com/gspot/ UPDATE: If you're looking for Nimo and cant find it because the links are broken, visit http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/6/48608 NOTES 1. Only install codecs that you need... installing mass codecs (i.e., like the way WindowsXP does with drivers) will not work since many of the codecs are inter-conflicting. This is especially the case with the Nimo Codec Pack. 2. If you get a FOURCC Code of 0. Odds are you have a FAKE. You can check the FourCC using GSPot. STEP-BY-STEP CODECs 1. UNINSTALL ALL YOUR CODECS (DivX, Nimo, XviD, etc). For more insight on the nitty gritty codecs, see http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/81570 2. Install Indeo Codecs. This should include the Indeo3, Indeo4 and Indeo5 Codecs. Grab it at http://codecs.nm.ru/iv5setup.exe or http://home.eunet.no/~pereivin/iv5setup.exe 3. Install DivX 5.x You can grab it from http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/divx_pro_for_windows.cfm. You can specify the installation path and whether or not to install the DivX Player 4. If you want to, install the DivX Player You can specify the installation path during the install. You can grab it from http://download.divx.com/player/DivXPlayerInstaller.exe 5. Install the Nimo 5.0 Build 8. This is a messy one and can be potentially ruinous if you choose the default installation. Download DivFix and extract it to the DivFix folder in your NIMO installation (default C:\Program Files\NimoCodec Pack\DivFix\). Overwrite whatever files may be there already. You can grab DivFix from http://download.divfix.maxeline.com/DivFix110.zip 11. Download AviFix. It serves a similar purpose to DivFix and between the both of them, you can fix most movies. You can grab it from http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avifix.html There you have it! hey praetor thats a great setup however i use jus the DIVX5.0 bundle pack xvid codec and the nimo with configs of nothing in anyof the options apart from directshow filters and only tick g400 divx filter 2.7 ac3 decoder ac3 filter this allows me to view all and every single file without prob
Well whatever works! This is essentially for newbies to provide some sort of "standard" set of codecs and filters and such so that they can come and do a comparison of the codecs they have and such. It also allows them to do some minor video editing and stuff._X_X_X_X_X_[small]ASUS A7V8X-X, AMD2500+ Samsung 1024MB, PC2700 360GB [3x120GB, 7200, 8MB] MSI Starforce, GeForce4 Ti4400 128MB AFTERDAWN IRC: irc.emule-project.net, #ad_buddies COME SAY HI![/small]

hey, doesn't Divx Total Pack take care of it all? I haven't run into any problems yet with video or audio.
Can I simply remove the dll files in the sys folder to remove codecs, or do I have to use the uninstall program that come with the codecs? (I was wondering b/c I don't have shortcuts to a lot of codecs I have as I never figured I'd have to delete them... stupid me )
CHeck Control Panel --> Add Remove. Also check these folders (default installation): c:\Program Files\NimoCodec Pack c:\Program Files\DivX I cant remember the rest hehe
yea sorry heres the link (divx Total pack 1.5) http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divx_total_pack.html
dear Praetor i removed and reinstalled all my codecs like mentioned in ur link, i still have 2 avi files that i cannot play. i get no errors in real player, no errors when i check them with GSPOT(it claims to be able to play the file) and still i cannot see the pic or hear anything when i play the file. I dont understand what the problem is. BTW i have played other avi files and they work fine (but if it is a prob with the files why doesnt gspot pick it up?) Please help
people, people. why waste your time messing around with nimo and all that when divx total pack takes care of it. im telling you, ive had no probs and neither has any of my friends. heres the link again. http://www.divx-digest.com/software/divx_total_pack.html or the direct link http://www.quellicheilpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=146 (just click on "DivX Total Pack 1.7" at the beginning of the paragraph.
Seems like a nice pack. Although you should never download everything from a codec pack. Its best to keep things simple and only install what is absolutely necessary. That way when you have a problem itll be easy to pinpoint the exact nature and fix it. Downloading codecs left and right will only cause you frustration in the future. But thats just the opinion of a very very cautious guy
Bingo! kardi03: Open the movie up with GSPOT and in the top right hand corner in the Video section there will be a box that says 4CC. If that box is zero, odds are you have a fake. Also click the "Render" button at the bottom of GSPOT to see if the codecs yo have can actually decompress the movie (no gurantee you can watch it but a step in the right direction). You may also consider checking out the movie with AVICodec since it gives a different kind of feedback and such.
to: booty I tried the Divx Total Pack, and it seems to be working fine! I just want to thank u for the advise!
