I have had dvd x copy for a year and 1/2 and have made back up copies of all my dvds. about 4 dozen. have never had a problem. just bought Band of Brothers and attempted to make a back up. it goes through all the motions of coping the disc. then i get the message to install a blank dvd. i do and hit burn now. . it starts out like it is making a copy and after about 20 seconds it stops and says burn failed. is there some movies that dvd x copy cannot copy.

    willy2468,

You are correct, there are indeed certain DVD's that XCopy can't do. It is especilly true of episode type DVD's and several Disney movies.

You however have other options -

First is the DVDShrink / Nero combo - Shrink is free and you can get a 30-day trial of Nero free if you don't already have it -

Here ya go - the programs and an easy guide :))

    Shrink download - http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=c53155f4dd417b97fb6287581453b338&threadid=32393

A 30 day, free, fully functional Nero 6 download can be had here:

Willy, I wholeheartedly agree with Pete. I have used the DVD Shrink/Nero combo to back up all of my daughters Disney collection.

Coincidentally, I am in the process now of backing up my Band of Brothers collection as well. The discs are DVD-9's, so they don't fit onto one DVD-R without some compression. DVD Shrink will let you compress the titles to fit onto one DVD-R.

I, however, decided to keep each episode at the highest quality, and I'm burning each individual episode to it's own DVD-R using the Re-Author option in DVD Shrink. I don't get to keep the menu or the field guide manual, but I can always pop in the original discs if I would like to access these options.

Shrink has burned each episode perfectly, and I have used DVDInfoPro to check each disc afterwards for read errors. So far, I've been 8 for 8 on successful burns with no read errors, and they play in 3 different DVD drives, 2 standalone players, and our PS2 setup in our vehicle. Surprisingly enough, all of them have been with Princo's.

    willy2468,

Remember to stop back and let us know how you did :))

BTW - When I backed up "Sex in the City" I used DeCrypter, DVD2One (in the "join" mode) and Nero, putting all 12 episodes on a single DVD with excellent results ! DVD2One has a 30-day free trial and I liked it so much I purchased it. Just playing with it, I put 3, DVD-9 movies (movie only) on a single DVD and 4, DVD-5 movies on a single DVD, again, with very good results :)

Wishing you the best of luck with your burn -

Ya i just backed up BoB last night, well dvd 1. I had to set all the menus to Still Shots, looks odd, and i compressed the video a few hundred MB so I could get the DTS sound, but it sill looks amazing. My quetion is with DVD Shrink, the newest version is there any way to cut out the extras, because all i could figure out was to change the compression to the lowest setting for those.

    Thanks for the help

    SloFire,

No problem, that - use DVDShrink in the re-author mode - just click and drag what you want from the right side of the screen to the left (under the DVD folder thingie) - you will lose "menus" but it'll work just great :) When I re-author, I just keep the audio I want and the movie - I lose all the additional languages, extras and trailers (sometimes I even get rid of the movie's credits too :))

Enjoy, don't forget to stop back and let us know how you made out -

BTW - Welcome to you too, we like new blood in our little corner of the world :)

I have tried everything to copy Band of Brother and cant get it to copy past 30%. It just stops and locks up. This is really happening with most movies. I have no video files on the pc they are deleted as soon as a burn is complete. I ahve use dvdshrink and tried just one episode at a time and still it locks up. Its getting expensive. The log tells me nothing because it freezes. Anyone had sim. Problems. I have 1gig mem. 200gig HD. I/O Magic dual format DVD RW and a Memorex 52x24x52 CD-RW. Using memorex media.
    Help.

    Nasty_Jim,

Ya gotta use DVD Shrink in the re-author mode, a bit of a hassle the first time or two but around the third episode it's not so bad -

Since you’re having trouble with Shrink - Uninstall Shrink, reboot, reinstall the new one, version 3.1.7 Beta 3. then follow the guide -

    New Shrink -
    Shrink download - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd_shrink.cfm

Guide for 2 (or more) DVD’s on Shrink -

If you want the easiest way to do it - Buy DVD2One - it was designed to do it in the “Join” mode - rip with Decrypter in the “file” mode and give it to DVBD2One :) check Willy’s success -
