Hi, I could be in the wrong place so if I am my apologies, I've been looking all over these forums for the answer to my question but cant find it ! I have an avi file thats 1GB 1240x720 (720p) I want to convert this to a DVD (Standard DVD5) to play on my DVD player (HDMI). I've tried a couple of different programs - ConvertXToDVD, Blaze Media Pro but all are reducing the resolution to 720x480 or there abouts, I think (might be wrong here) the file size will increase on converting to DVD but should a 1 GB file be larger than 4GB after converting. I can burn the file directly to a DVD without converting and keep the same res problem is my DVD player cant render the video via the DivX decoder on it! Best I've managed to get was 720x480 for DiX files Question : Can this be done ? Can I actually convert an avi file with that res to a DVD without loosing the quality ? If not I'll stick with the old PC to TV but would really like to be able to backup the files I have to proper DVD format Any help would be great.
Standard DVD can't go beyond 480 vertical resolution - it's just not in the specs. Any DVD authoring tool you use will render the video to 480 lines of resolution no matter what the source video's resolution. In order to playback high-def material your best bet is to keep the original file and use your PC connected to your display. Anyone else got any ideas?
Thanks for the responce I was beginnning to think that was the only option ! have tried more authoring tools WinAVI and the like still only get the 720x480 oh well will have to continue with the PC connected to the TV Unless someone else has any way of doing it
If you have an HD-DVD player you can record high-def 720p or 1080i material to standard DVD discs and play them back as HD-DVD's. There's no need for an HD-DVD burner for this one. The HD resolution is maintained. Here's a guide: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146 I've done this with an episode of CSI in 1080i recorded to my PC thru Firewire from my Comcast HD Cable Box. The 45 minute clip can fit into a single layer DVD+R. I think there's also a way to do this with BluRay but I need to do some more research.
I've had a look through the guide and seems to be refering to .ts etc I have .avi files that are in a 720p resolution I was trying to then burn these to a regualr single layer DVD as a DVD (.vob) not sure if this can be done with the guide that you gave me Will play about with it though and see what I can come up with thanks
