hd loader and different modes? Also game freeze when press "start"

I just got my hd loader and was reading on some pages that games being played in different modes. Like mode 1, 2, or 3. Where is that accessible at and how do you know what modes to play them at?

Also I backed up Viewtiful Joe just fine but when I press the start button on the controller to skip through the beginning screens everything freezes. Anyone know what the problem could be?

Viewtful Joe isn't compatible. In any mode.

 

when you say in any mode how do you get to the different modes?

And also where do I get the listing of all the games that are compatible and non compatible?
