HD .mkv file format minimum specification

    My friend has just purchased a HD TV. We wants to upgrade his PC to a specification that will play 720p HD .mkv files smoothly.

    I can plug my laptop into the screen and play movies in high definition no problem. My spec is a AMD 1.6 Dual core, 256 ATI shared Graphics and 1256mb of free RAM (not being used by shared graphics card).

    His PC is fairly old put has 1256mb of ram an ATI 125mb Radeon 9250 and unfortunately a Celeron Processor (not sure of clock speed). Depending on the socket that the Processor sits in if we can upgrade this to a Pentium 4 3ghz do you think the PC’s specification will be high enough to run the HD video.

    I have purchased Core AVC and also use the combined community codec pack so will probably use the same on his.

    Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated.

    You cant tell me no one here has any idea what the rough minimum spec's are for HD .mkv video file playback?

    What specs do people have and their video's play ok?

    i dont think it will be capable of watching the file...

    my current setup is p4 3ghz, 1gig ram, dont know my graphic card and the viewing is choppy...my suggestion is the upgrade to core duo with at least 2.4ghz, and 1gb ram.

    I had a P4 2.0GHz with 1GB ram and it couldn't play it. I upgraded to a 2.8GHz and it still didnt work. My friend has a P4 3.0, Ill test a file on his computer and reply back with an update.

    He has upgraded to a P4 3ghz and is still having problems. I think its morelikely to be the grfx card. Its only a £27 jobbie.
    He's going to get a more upto date one and try again.

    The graphics card has very little to do with it. The movies are using the CPU to play. My Friend that has a 3.0 ghz plays his fine at 66% cpu usage, but I think he has a really nice motherboard. My Dell obviously has a crappy motherboard, I think his bus speed is much higher, which would dramatically help it. The CPU does 95% of the work for the video playback. The money would be better spent on a new motherboard.

    Your not using vista right, your on XP. That would help to use XP.
