[bold]BASICS:[/bold] I have a new LG GSA-5163D external DVD/CD burner and I'm running Nero Burning ROM 6.6.0.15 while trying to burn a data DVD. I'm using SONY DVD+R disks. [bold]PROBLEM:[/bold] Consistently, when burning a DVD the process begins perfectly and progresses until anywhere from 20% - 60%. Then, the hard drive stops reading, the progress bar stops moving forward (ie. the percentage of completion stops increasing), but no errors come up in Nero and, in fact, the timer continues keeping the time without stopping. That is, Nero does [bold]not[/bold] hang, and yet no more burning is taking place. The burner's light continues blinking as it had been doing. I'm forced at this point to physically turn off the power of the burner (this is the only way...I can't stop the burning process from Nero). At that point, of course, all types of errors pop up in Nero, as would be expected. I'm including a log of one of these instances below, though I won't include the "errors" at the bottom as they are the result of my turning off the burner, not indications of the real problem. Interestingly, this same exact problem happens when I try to burn CD's (ie. not DVD's) at speeds higher than 8X. [bold]I'VE TRIED:[/bold] Despite my newbie status, I've read through posts here for a couple of weeks and haven't found any solutions. I've loaded in the ASPI driver, I've uninstalled (using the clean tool) and reinstalled Nero (using the driver cleaner and registry checker). I've disable Windows' burning on all drives. Suspecting the hard drive was reading too slowly, I did a "determine maximum speed" test before another burn and it said the hard drive was reading at 7.9X (I'm only burning at 4X). I know media is the cause of most problems, but I believed that SONY media were of good quality? I also have tried shutting down all non-essential processes before, including virus scan. @menicucci - - the link here has gone a bit funny but it looks like there's an A104 version around.. - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2036 - just for info, always try to free up more memory during burns All i can really suggest is look thru here, 'fraid this sort of problem has been going on for a while. it may be helpful if you can determine which chipset your burner is using, ie is it ALi chipset - see if this helps - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/102002
Creaky, Thanks for the reply. I checked out the LG website and it appears as thought the A104 firmware update is for the GSA-5163B, not the GSA-5163D, though I'll keep looking for an update. I read through the posts you linked, though I think my situation might be different than theirs. I'm using a FireWire connection, not USB 2.0, and I'm not getting any error message at all (not even the "SCSI command aborted" error mentioned in the other posts). Rather, as I said, the hard drive stops reading and the burning process seems to be stalled (since the percentage stays the same), but all the while Nero doesn't hang and doesn't issue an error. I think I'll pick up some Verbatim DVD's and see if media might be an issue, but I'm not hopeful. The thing that perplexes me is this: why would the hard drive stop reading, unless Nero told it to? And yet Nero doesn't register any error. I'll keep thinking. Thanks again.
