Hi Im upgrading the hdd of my playstation 3 and continuesly get the same issue,The correct Hdd cannot be found. My hdd 3.5 1TB internal with extention cable, which works with original 2.5 120Gb hdd. F.W 3.41 Ive read what forums I can find in relation to this error that occurs and its like their is no power/ comunication to the new drive. Do I have to format it to fat 32 first or something??????? The firmware is the fixed version of 3.41. Does anyone an Idea???????
Where is the drive getting power? I don't think that the internal connector that powers the 2.5" drive will not power a 3.5" drive. If you have good power, then I would connect the drive to a PC and use diskpart to clean the drive, create a new partition, and do a slow format...you don't have to let the format finish; just let it get to a few percent to make sure the drive does not start clicking/overheating/etc.
Not only does it use more power, but it uses a slightly different power setup, as the 3.5" drives need both 5v and 12v, while the 2.5" drives run on 5V. Same connector style...but the one on the PS3 mainboard does not have the 12v connected. There is a 12V line inside the system; it is one of the posts that stick into the bottom of the power supply.
A 3.5 hdd will have to be in an enclosure, which requires a separate power supply. Is this the cable you are using? If it is then this is just for data transfer, so you arent even powering the hdd. If you are using something like this: Then its what killerbug says, not enough power.
Got it all working (VERY MESSY) Thanks! The second Cable is the one Im using, and what I did was cut the power and wired it into an old power supply, Im going to have to use a HDD cradle to neaten it up. Thanks Again
I have a Western Digital external 2TB drive, with its own power supply and an e-Sata connector (in addition to USB 2.0 and Firewire connectors). Can I make this the INTERNAL drive for my PS3 Slim, by plugging it into the PS3's internal SATA cable ? I gather I'd need a SATA extension lead (to extend the length of the cable). Where I say the Internal drive, I mean in a logical sense. The PS3 "thinks" it's the Internal drive, even though it remains external to the PS3 in a physical sense. Is this possible with the PS3 Slim ? Thanks guys.
They make cables that are like the first cable from the above thread, but with ESATA on one end, and sata male on the other end. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...63&cm_re=esata_bracket-_-12-104-063-_-Product ...You can then use a esta female to female adapter, or you can splice into a female cable end if you have the proper tools.
It opens a new world when you finally find what your looking for. And the succeed at getting it to work!! Good luck
Yea tpb it'll work. The only problem I've found, OP, is the power issue. I get it sometimes too, but only with the slim because of the differences in power supply. Never have troubles with this issue on my phat
