I'm going to assume you can only do this if the sound is integrated into the graphics card. If it was you would need to connect the HDMI to your receiver than to TV or just TV if thats where you want the sound. If you can't get sound through HDMI, then you would need the headphone to white and red connection. Sound won't be as good as HDMI but, better than laptop speakers.

Almost makes putting an HDMI port on a laptop useless if you can't get the sound through it.

Just select the HDMI audio output as the preferred sound output driver in control panel.

    Hi,

I have a Dell Studio XPS 1340 with Vista Ultimate and a NVIDIA GeForce 9500M. It has a HDMI port which I've tried using to connect to my Panasonic Vierra Plasma (which has 3 HDMI ports) and I simply cannot get either picture or sound onto the TV and I know I'm selecting the right HDMI port on the TV. (I've tried them all BTW!!).

I've looked all over and can't find a solution. Can anyone give me some pointers?

    Regards,

    Ben

have you made sure the TV is switched on and set to the correct port before powering on the PC, some TVs are bit funny with seeing PCs via HDMI unlesss done in this order

Does the graphic card control panel allow you to select the functions for a second diplay?
Could also be a driver issue, a friend has one of these laptops and his was up and runnng to a Samsung TV straight away with no issues.
Have you ever had any HDMI device working on the TV?

    Hi BigDK,

Yes the TV is connected to an Onkyo Amp via HDMI and is the primary source through which Blue Ray is played.
