I recently acquired my first dvd burner. The Nero suite it came with sucks but I wanted to at least get all this video off my computer into a data DVD or whatever. Only problem is, all of a sudden all my .avi files don't have any picture! There is sound when I play them, but no picture. I had a bunch of old TV shows (british) I had downloaded and am sad to lose them.
Is there anything I can do to get back my shows? I have recently done some hard-disk clean up as well as de-fragging and I just downloaded AdAware and used it. Every single .avi file on my hard drive is now sound-only. What gives?? Did I clean my computer too much?

Seems like you may have lost or altered some codec or settings.

Download and install VLC. Do they play now?

Yes it worked! Thank you so much! What do you mean I lost or altered the codec or settings? What should I do/not do in the future so that this doesn't happen again? Is there any way to recover these files or is VLC my life boat here? I had originally wanted to make these into DVDs to play in a regular DVD player.

I've just inferred from what you said. Nero installs it's own set
of codecs and filters and although it's not supposed to,
sometime it can interfere with what you already had...

VLC uses it's own routines to play the files, and is therefore
immune to any problems in the Directshow playback system,as used
    by WMP and others.

If the problem persists after Nero is unistalled, try reinstalling
the particular codec as used by the avi files, xvid or divx,
    what ever it is.

Run some of the AVIs through GSpot, it will alert you to what codec you need.
