(help) boot up is failing

    When I installed my via 6421 chip to my motherboard and rebooted it to finish installing an error popped up and said " windows could not start cuz the following file is missing or corrupt: (windows root)/system32/hal.dll."please re install a copy of the file above. Where do you get this file from? Or can you bypass this in anyway??? Please help!!

    Insert a WinXP disc and boot to it.

    Press R for repair.

    It will scan your drive and you will select #1 for your C:/ drive.

    It may ask you for a password. If not Admin password, simply hit enter

    When you get this prompt, C:\WINDOWS

    Type BOOTCFG /REBUILD

    It will take a bit while it scans.

    Once it is done scanning hit Y for yes.

    Press enter twice and you should be back at C:\WINDOWS

    Type Exit

    I'm sure there are places on the internet to download a WinXP cd. Probably around 600MB though.

    I found my disc and it is scanning. How long dies this take?
