I just finished building my new PC: PSU: Hiper Type R 480W CPU: LGA775 3.2 Intel P4 with retial heatsink and fan Motherboard: Asrock 775Twins-HDTV GPU: Onboard Ati Radeon Xpress Ram: DDR2 samsung 533 HDD: Maxtor Diamond 10 160GB SATA DVD -/+ RW LG Dual Layer 3 Case fans. Ok, i didnt get a power cable for my power supply, so i borrowed one off my other PC. Its a 5amp power cable, and works fine on my other PC. So i plug the power cable in, turn the power supply on from the back. My mouse LED lit up, and slowley faded, i pressed the ON button on my PC.... Nothing.... Then i smelt a burning plastic smell, so i quickly turned off and unplugged the power supply, opened the case, and there was smoke! I dont no where its come from, and since this PC has never been started before i dont no if the components all work! I dont no if they will work now either! I dont no what to do! Can anyone help? Please!?
Last time i had a comp that went up in smoke it was the speaker cable inside the case, was it a plasticy/rubber smell?, u need to look for singed bits.
That's just it, i cant see ANY singed bits. I have had the RAM, CPU, Heatsink and all the connection wires out, cant see any singed parts. I'm wondering if it is purely the PSU, because the fan didnt even move when i turned it on...
could be anything inside your pc thats singed try taking everything apart and checking everything that includes all the chips and the motherboard.
Usually it is the wiring insulation that will cause smoke from the copper inside getting too hot and burning off the insulation. Check all of the wires coming from the power supply for signs of damage. Another possibility is that the switch from 110v/220v on the back of the power supply is in the wrong position. I haven't seen that very often, but when I worked overseas I used to see that a lot, people from the US plugging in their equipment to 220v circuits before adjusting the power supply.
There is no switch on the power supply to change. It says: 195VAC~250VAC on it. So its would work in the UK. I have checked all the components in the PC, and a couple of the motherboards capacitors smell a bit smokey. So i guess i will somehow get a return on that. Other than that, there are a couple of wires, the Switch on/off wire and the power LED wires that the ends smell like matches. So i guess there fried. Nothing else has a hint of smoke or any other damage. Im also thinking my PSU might not be working properly... whe it was switched on the fan didnt even move. And suggestions?
Hope the mobo is ok, cause i just fixed my nephew comp, his psu totally burn but the mobo and every single hardware is ok.. then i just have to replace the psu..
