    Two drives are:

    HL-DT-ST GDR8082N .... Hitachi laptop DVD-rom drive
Samsung TSST SH-S182D .... 18x writer drive in a different machine

Nero wrote both a data DVD and an ISO-to-DVD without a hitch. I had verification turned on.

Problem: Both platters appear fine in the Samsung, but neither shows up (mount at all) in my laptop. Quirks: I can share the Samsung over a network and "play" a DVD by dragging its video folder over VLC. Other DVDs which play fine in the laptop drive also play in the Samsung.

    -- What's going wrong?

***NONE*** of the DVDs involved have any kind of regional or encryption encoding, so it shouldn't be a matter of that stuff.

what's going on is the media! use better media and also read this:

there are plenty of reasons why certain dvds won't play in other players:

    1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
    2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
    3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
    http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
    4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
    5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
    6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!

follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.

the information may be wrong about your problematic burner but the information is correct about compatibility!

It doesn't what settings you twiddle or what media you use if the writer is starting the burn so far away from the center that other drives think you're inserting blanks.

    @mike18xx ,

You came here to AD with a problem that you wanted an answer to, one was given and now you have the hide to make this comment. If in fact the comment is true then you should have worded your response in a more pleasent way, you will not receive any assistance by adopting this type of attitude!!

We all have our peeves, don't we? One of yours is tact. One of mine is receiving earnestly asserted erroneous advice (e.g., "what's going on is the media!" from someone with no experience regarding the drives in question would lead me to blowing more money on media when that's not the problem). Regards "the spirit of helpfulness" in general, realize that no answer is better than wrong answers sending one off on one wild goose chase after another, and guesses should be clearly presented as such.

@Mike18xx...... the fact of the matter is that the advise I gave you is NOT bad information just not the solution that would correct the problem you are having! Just because your drive was the problem that doesn't make the advise about media INCORRECT! It was not a [bold]wild goose chase[/bold] as it was information that might correct a problem down the road! Using bad media is a major problem. And the advise was givin in earnest as to help a member out! and it was [bold]YOU[/bold] who [bold]incorrectly gave your assessment of your problem:[/bold]
and the advise I gave you was on what [bold]YOU[/bold] wrote as to what the problem was! If what you wrote was incorrect and I gave advise to what you wrote..... you have no one to blame but yourself! Since it was your Samsung drive that is your problem! So how was anyone to know that the culpret was your drive????? Next time give better information ...... the old saying [bold]Garbage in, Garbage out[/bold] holds true today!

I also want to comment that:
how was I to know this when you didn't even tell us that!? Still doesn't make the fact that the advise given was correct about compatibility! And you expressed yourself wrong... or should I say left out things that matters! Garbage in, Garbage out!
