    Hi everyone,

Please can anyone advise on the following problem:

I have an avi movie file, ideally I would like to burn it onto a DVD for convenience.

However, I noticed when viewing in Realplayer, the video was fine, but there was no sound. I figured it was a codec issue, and downloaded Windoes Essentials codec pack, hoping that would solve it.

However, now I get sound and no picture! Weird!

Post-downloading codecs, I also tried in a different player (the WMP classic included with the codec pack), but it too played sound but with no video.

WMP Classic stated the following error as to why (double dutch to me lol):
    -------------------------------------------------------

As I say, prior to downloading the codec pack, I had the picture in realplayer but no sound!?

If anyone could advise I would be very grateful.
I don't know much about media and am trying this as part of a small project to create a DVD with video/sound/subtitles (they come later lol)

    Thanks for reading

    Hi again

I meant to add - I examined the file using AVICodec tool, but it seemed that all of the many codecs under various heading were fine - all had state "enabled".

I guess this rules out a codec conflict or missing?

Is it me doing something silly? Thanks.

Where did the .avi file originate? Why in the hell would you have a useless piece of controlling software, like RealPlayer, on your computer?

Does the .avi file play in Windows Media Player?

    Hi GrandpaBW,

    Many thanks for your response.

Re -Realplayer - I had to start using it, as if the BBC dont broadcast commentry of my teams game, they put an online feed of the match on - it wanted Realplayer (.ram files?) before it would work.

I know very little in this field, and in nmy layman's ignorance had assumed that all players were very similar - obviously this is a deeply flawed assumption lol.

Anyway, I had only tried in Realplayer and WMP classic so far. Do you advise trying in the latest version of WMP? I will do this tonight and feedback.

Out of curiosity, is there anywhere I can learn more about the merits of different media players?

    Thanks again for posting.

    Hi again

Well, I tried in the latest version of windows media player (included with vista) - it is just the same as real player and windows media classic - ie sound and no picture. (prior to downloading codec pack, I had the picture but no sound!)

    Thanks for any help!
