My laptop froze this afternoon. I attempted to restart it by manually shutting down. The computer will no longer boot. I receive message unmountable_boot_volume and a technical message: stop 0x000000ED(0x823D3D98, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I can't boot in safe mode. I was able to run a hard drive test and received the following error: #1-07 Fail

Is there anything that can be done or is my hard drive fried?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

by the looks of things your hard drive hasn't completely failed.... Yet.

The fact it can boot to a point and display a typical windows failure error means that certain parts of it are damaged, and the drive may be on it's way out completely.

The best thing for you to do now is DON'T TURN IT ON. If it is a typical laptop hard drive failure (i.e. parts of the a platter / head have been damaged to to a severe knock) then further use (i.e. the platter and head moving at 5.4k or 7.2k rpm) will cause more destructive damage to data on the drive.

You need to remove the hard drive in the laptop and with the damaged drive you can either get a 2.5" > 3.5" IDE convertor, a 2.5" IDE > USB convertor / caddy, or a 2.5" IDE > SATA convertor. Either one of these devices will allow you to connect your drive to another PC by method of your choice, and then allow you to attempt to recover some of your data. I will however keep all your fingers crossed.

If it is a windows software failure (which I cant see since the HD diag tool reported a FAIL) then you will be able to recover pretty much all the data that was on the drive before it failed, with the exception of the data on the damaged sectors.

If for example the data has been corrupted you can also get some tools of the internet that specialise in data recovery from damaged / bad sectors on drives.

If you need to do is replace the drive in the laptop, it can be done by a repair shop / anyone competent. I can include you in the latter category if you have a fairly good knowledge of pc repair / building and if you want any more info on doing this give us a shout.

Let us know how you get on.

Is this a windows xp operating system?

when you do a hard shurdown, sometimes system files get corrupted. To fix it you need the installation cd, bootup with the cd then go to the dos screen and type chkdsk c:\f . In most cases this will fix the damage system files.
