help converting/fixing wmv file

    I have a wmv that I would like to recode. I want to convert it because I cannot scroll forwards of bacwards with it in WMP. it just plays and stops. is there any way to fix this? If not, how can I encode it to mpeg or avi? I tried tmpeg xpress, but it said it could not read the wmv file. thanks for the help.
