We have been backing up our movies for a little while - 685 to date, usually 2 DVD's per day and 2 VCD's off the TV. (less than 8 mths)

Did the usual - rip with DVD Fab Decrypter onto the HD then use Shrink to burn, sometimes use Nero Recode but mainly Shrink and I can do this at the same time, both rip and burn, since having the Dual Xeon on a PC-DL mobo. I placed the usual Ridata 8x -r into the burner and got an error msg, [bold]to put in a empty disk[/bold]. I tried to read the disc using DVD Identifier and nothing - [bold]failed to initaite disc[/bold]. The burner sounds like it's clunking with the DVD blank in there.

Just in case, I downloaded the latetest firmware for the Pioneer v.122, thinking that might help. The ASPI is working.

Have I worn out the burner? Do I need to get another one? Any help would be great.

If it's making a bad sound then it's probably on the way out. U could always remove the cables, reboot, then attach it again and see if that does anything.

But it def sounds like it's pooched!
