Hi, my laptop seems to have developed a strange fault.

I am using a laptop with a Sony DVD RW DW-D56A (DVD/CD writer).

I was burning some audio CDs. I had succesfully burned one, then when I put the next disc in, Nero asked for an empty disc. Whatever I did, it would not recognise the empty CD.

I have checked 'My Computer' and the drive is shown there, as it is in Device Mamager.

The strange thing is, if I put in a blank DVD it recognises it, also if I put in a DVD with data/files on it, it will read that too.

When I go back to trying a CD, nothing happens.

Device Manager says the device is working correctly but it obviously isn't.

Does anyone have any ideas to help?

    Thanks very much

    Hi angus999
If you have a Sony or Dell laptop check and see if the firmware is up to date. Here's a link for the latest firmware for those 2 manufacturers.

Have you tried a different brand of CD? Does the drive recognize the one it burned?

Mine's doing the exact same thing. My DVD drive (lite-on) will read any type of DVDs but the second I put in a CD be it a audio cd, game disks, blanks, anything...it won't read them. Has anyone found a fix to this yet?

    Hi Kilos13
What's the model # of your drive? Is the firmware update?

To tell you the truth, I've give up on it now and treated myself to a new laptop. Thanks again mate :)

I have a Lite-ON SOHW-1693S06C and yes I've already updated the firmware to the latest version.

I've tried so many things that people say fixed their problem but so far nothing has worked for me.

@angus999 - either/both of those AC/DC gifs in the sig are waaaaay over the 50kb allowed limit, they either need major resizing or removing to comply with the 50kb limit

    @Kilos13
Do you have another pc you can swap this drive in & see if it works in it? Try burning any dvd's?
Drive may just be on the way out.

I can easily burn DVDs. But I also have another drive in my PC and it can't read any CDs either (it's just a plain CD burner).

I've swapped the drive to a different computer and it does the same thing, just makes a funny beep noise when I put in a CD, so I'm just guessing the laser is toast, I'll have to pick up another one, or borrow a friends.

    I'll post my results lol.

Yeah I'm kinda thinking it going or gone now that you tried it in another pc. Though usually the dvd part goes 1st - then again it probably depends on what you burn most.
