How did you reinstall vista with a disc if so retry but this time format hdd, better still use gparted, burn to iso & format hdd.... WARNING DO NOT FORMAT IF YOU HAVE A RECOVERY PARTITION as your only means of recovery ,if you have a vista disc do a destructive re-install,that is a full reformat not just a repair, once hdd is formatted virus will be gone, you could use gparted to check to see if the virus created a hidden partition just to be sure it won't come back..lol.

If you have no product key for vista you'll have to go back to the OS that was originally installed

Isn't a product key on the bottom of the laptop, right next to the words telling you which operating system it goes to? Why install vista, especially if you have no key?

Did you really not know you would need a valid key? i'd be pulling my hair out too if I realized I blindly jumped into something I was clueless about, did no prior research, and now through my own actions have made life harder for myself. I don't mean to be harsh but it just seems like this wasn't researched or planned very well from the onset.

I've used some of those activation hacks before. Some of them open a port and send data back to whoever scripted the hack, or about the time you get your system setup the way you like it Microsoft sends a message saying you arent using proper windows activation and puts you on a countdown.
If you have to use windows, buy it, use a valid key and activate, its easiest. If you must use something free learn linux
