Can only agree with the other replies - your def need to add more ram, with a pentium 4, I would use 1 gig as minimum. Dep on your HD size, partition it with windows on the C: Drive and Installed Software on D: and your documents on E: I uses this system and it works a treat. Its also great if windows crashes as you never lose your documents!!

use hard drive diagnostic tool .. according to the vendor to diagnose your hard disk..

512 MB of memory should be enough.
A system partition of about 8 GB will ensure you'll always have enough free disk space for defragmentation.
Just use 2 partitions: C: as your windows- and programs- (system) partition and D: as your data partition.
Your mate may also consider a second hard drive as his data drive, thereby keeping his current 30 GB drive as his system drive.
Installing this second (slave) drive first, you guys may consider moving his data files to the new drive, then putting a fresh new Windows installation on his master drive, to ensure good, clean, fresh Windows operation.

I don't have time to read that report, but I don't think that's necessary. 256MB RAM is a little low, but shouldn't cause the problem you described. If you can backup your data and reformat your disk along the lines we've specified.

Make sure you use at least two different anti-spy scanners.
