    Hi there,

    My friend has this old computer, and he did something very bad!

    Windows XP (unknown version or Service Pack)

    For some reason he wanted to check the RAM on his computer, so he turned his computer off (did NOT pull the plug out), opened his case, and pulled the RAM out (without grounding himself)!

    He then "looked" at his RAM, and then put it back in, afterwards, he turned his comp on and he got this error in Windows XP;

    Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\ntfs.sys

    You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM.

    Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

    So he tried what it told him to do, using his old CD-ROM, however the following error came up;

    An unexpected error(205001800) occured at line 1768 in D:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.

    So I gave him my WinXP SP2 disc, and he chose repair, and the following error came up;

    An unexpected error(168611905) occured at line 1773 in D:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\arcdisp.c.

    What should he now do to repair or fix his computer?

    He had also tried a new install, but both gave the same error!

    Could it be that his RAM is busted? However when he looks in his BIOS, it recognises that the RAM is present, and gives all the info. on it!

    Please help, thank you very much.

    All praises in advance.

    try to use the hard drive (RAM/whatever part) as the main drive for another computer. Something must be wrong with another part of his PC if it loads.

    If it doesn't load... find a way to access the hard drive from a different computer. (maybe as a secondary drive) I'm not exactly sure what to do from there, but you can probably figure something, or get someone else with more knowledge to help.

    If it does load... use trial and error to figure out what part of his computer he screwed. Take parts of his PC and put it into your test PC, until you've found the problem. (or whatever mode of trial and error you choose)

    ** Please note: I'm no computer whiz. I am a lateral thinker. I can do general problem solving, but I can't fix some specific problems. I hope I helped just a little for you. Best of luck.

    I guessing its SP2 becuase the "r" option is mostly on sp2 and windows update aways update it... well anyway if there is more than 1 stick of ram try swaping ram position. But I don't see this as a hardware problem but as a software problem

    Try recovery console if u could go that far on the xp disk, its also the r button but before the repair r. After that loads type in the number to login to the windows installation, probably 1. then type in "copy D:/i386/ntfs.sys C:/windows/system32/drivers" without the " " Also D:\ is the cd drive, it would probably be D unless u have two hard drives or something. Edit: u also mention the drive is D.

    As with messing with computers, i have learned that while installing windows with some scratches will not always work, although the same cd drive can read it and copy it while running windows. I think that becuase in windows it has a better retry read error and better cache. You might want to try burning the xp cd. Note that it must be burned as a bootable cd, needing the boot.ini file or using nlite program.

    Edit: also can u explain where u see the error so i know how far u can go to? Like what the surrounding text is. Does it freezes after u press r to repair during the coping bar process, or before that.

    Srry bout my typos and my slightly bad english.
