This is going to be a little bit of long post so please bear with me: I know I'm a new at this, but I'm looking for some help identifying what's causing me to start a coaster factory. Before starting to try and burn DVD's I used your site- extremely helpful, I went out and bought verbatim dvd+r disks. Following this sites guides, the first three movies I burned worked flawlessly. I used DVD shrink to rip it initially, and then Nero (trial version) to burn. Unfortunately the trial version ran out and I used DVD decrypter to rip a previously burned disk (this failed). Then I tried roxio, which also produced a coaster, at least to my knowledge. The first three movie worked in my older pioneer DVD player, the last two did not. The DVD player tried to play them, but spun for a while, and then ejected the disk. Possible Problems: I dont know much about my DVD burner- it's labelled as HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GCA-4040N. I searched for it, but wasn't able to find anything I can make sense of. To be safe I burn everything at 2x for now. It is the single drive in my laptop (came with the computer). I could have used Roxio wrong, not being familiar with it- just drag and drop the Audio_TS and Video_TS folders like in Nero? The last burn had only 16.6 mb of free space- is that cutting it too fine? Maybe I need to try a different DVD player (don't currently have access to one.) I'm looking for any suggestions as to what might be the source of the problem. Thanks
Hi there Svenge, Let's go over this step by step, Okie Dokie ? Excellent ! Don't ever change. Stay with them forever and you'll never have media problems. Yes it failed. A previously burned disc has no encryption so it cannot be ripped. All you need to do is copy it. Pick it up with DVD Shrink and "spit it out" it back end. There's nothing you can do to it that hasn't been done. If it is one of those you burned with DVDD, then go to Shrink's "File" then "Open Disc Image" and process as usual. Roxio, IMO, is probably one of the worst Video programs on the market. Primarily because of it's hostility to other programs. You can burn with it but it seems to cause 90% of all other programs to fail because of the peripheral programs that load with Roxio. I would LOVE for you to rid yourself of that troublemaker. You need more like 16.6 GB of free space. Working with 16.6 MB of free disc space Will cause your entire PC to CRASH ! A HD cannot be completely full as it will have no room to move about. I don't know how it's able to work as it is. GET RID OF SOME PROGRAMS ! To even attempt to backup DVD's with Roxio or any other program YOU NEED TO HAVE AT LEAST 12 TO 14 Gig of free space to work with. That doesn't take into account the extra room you need to have to let your PC operate. Correct those problems and then you S/B fine. Pete PS. Consider trying Gear software. It's a lot like Nero (I don't think it's as good) BUT it has a 60-day trial period to try it and you can use it's burner to copy from disc to disc. http://www.gearsoftware.com/ Also, consider trying BurnatOnce. A FREE burning proggy that copies copy's with ease.
Thanks for the tips. By the way when I said 16.6 mb of free space, I meant left on the disc itself. ie. (numbers made up) 4440/4464 mb used on disc. That kind of thing. I have at least 20gb of free hard drive space. I've seen that if I can burn for free using File2iso (something like that) and then I think dvd-decrypter to copy the iso file to the disc. From what I understand after getting the Audio_TS and Video_TS files on the harddrive with DVD shrink, you use File2iso to make an ISO image, which you can use DVD Decrypter to copy. Am I correct in this, and is it a reliable way to do it? I'm going to get some more discs tomorrow and try it out.
You don't want to use the drag and drop features of either Nero or Roxio niether work very well as has been proven here many timwes over so do your self a favor and uninstall them. Why not just burn directly with Shrink using Nero ...... The source of your problem could be that you have both Nero and Roxio on the same computer as they don't co-exist well with each other add on top that you have their drag to disk programs running which does not help matters either. Check in Shrink that you have the checkbox checked for burning with Nero in the ..... Edit ----> Preferences ---> Fuile I/O Tab .... just like in the image and give it another try .... lets hope your Nero trial being expiered does not does not complain too loudly to you. While you are in here you should set your target size a little smaller .... I prefer 4300 mb in size ..... so ... Edit ----> Preferences Tab .... just like the image bellow Try that and let us know ..... Have Fun
I'd like to thank everyone for their ideas here. I eventually solved my problems. My basic problem was that I was trying to fit just a little too much on to a disc. Bassnut's preference modification in DVD shrink to make it stay at 4300mb was exactly the solution I needed. I did have to stick with Roxio, but at least it works. Thanks again.
