Hello, first off I just wanna say I have NO CLUE whatsoever about the Playstation 2. I've read all the threads on this internet and I still can't make any sense of this stuff.. I'm familiar with the PSP and how it works and stuff but this thing is driving me crazy. Now..

I have one of the slim PS2's with the model number: SCPH-77001. Aside from that, I really have no clue about anything else.. Any help about how I can get started hacking/modding this thing is greatly appreciated.

The newest method to play backups on the PS2 or to be able to use ELF files (applications for the PS2) is using what they call FreeMCboot 1.8

The easiest method to install is by using Swap Magic, unless you have a friend who has a modded PS2 already.

You can always sell the Swap magic later.

There is a free install service for fmcb 1.8, but right now those forums are down yet and not sure when they will be back up.

    Tutorials are here - link

or if you do a search on this forum on fmcb and esr, you should find more info.

Alright. Thanks man.. I just needed a little something to get me started on all this. I've been into hacking my PSP for years now and I'm starting to get a little bored. And the other day I was looking around and saw my old PS2 and decided I'd try to work on it now..

I didn't wanna spend any money, but I guess I can invest in Swap Magic and maybe sell it later when I get through with all this.

Is the install pretty easy or am I gonna run into some speed bumps?

No problem. Actually if you good at reading tutorials and following steps like with the psp, then you should have no problems with the PS2.

The Swap Magic requires you to block sensors. You can buy a fliptop, use Swap Tool V3, or you can do the following.

But for the part of installing fmcb 1.8 it does not require you to do this.

You only need to block the sensors if you were going to use the Swap Magic or other ELF files like Cogswap, CDLoader etc. Those are both tools for playing backups also, but older methods.

So just in case down the road you want a cheap way to block the sensors, then do the following.

Also here is a tutorial on uLaunch.elf and all that it can do - link

uLaunch.elf is basically a 'Windows Explorer' for the PS2
