    I'm trying to replace free AT&T norton software with free AVG 8.0 for my mom's computer. Will she be able to maintain this program with minimul tinkering. Very low tech user. Will this program be sufficient for all her computer security needs? When trying to install, it warns I have old roxio software with bugs in it. I'm sure I dont have Roxio software so I clicked continue. I did a file search on my computer for "ROXIO" and something very small said roxio under shared and I deleted it but this warning persisted so I clicked next anyway. Next AVG says to remove other antivris first even though I had already removed norton symantic. And I found nothing under "antivirus" when I did a file search on computer. Should I just install AVG any way, or are these programs hiding on computer somewhere that should be removed?

    you can use this norton uninstaller for tidbits left behind;

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

    never used it, cant say
    some other (free) choices:
    avira antivir
    Avast
    clamwin

    need AV and one or two antimalware apps, software firewall would be nice, mostly you need to know how one gets malware in the first place. see link below.

    maybe a left over service. you can bring up the service panel:
    start>run and type in services.msc and look. or you can post a hjt log that will list some running services, also a uninstall list:

    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

    * Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    * Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
    * By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    * Click on Install.
    * It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    * Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    * Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    * Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log (no attachments) into reply.

    to get the uninstall list: start hjt, click on open misc tools section
    click on open uninstall manager, then save list. save then copy/paste the list in reply.

    what is the value of displaying a uninstall list? I recently installed OS XP disk that came with my e machine on computer so I know I never downloaded any software on this machine. Unless it came with OS disk and I'm just not seeing it. Are you sugguesting I post a hjt log here? Why? Maybey I should just ignore AVG warnings and install AVG? I looked at services.msc and theres alot of programs. I suppose something could be hiding there.

    maybe you are missing something to uninstall

    commercial computers come with lots of bloatware pre-installed

    you can try that

    type avg and roxio in your favorite search engine
