Help - I had installed Nero when I already had Easy CD Creator on my system, which I later read could create a conflict... Well, my CD/DVD drive stopped working and I get the following error in device manager:

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
    Device Manager Error Code 31
This device depends on another device that is not functioning correctly.

I've tried uninstalling and cleaning the registry of all associated programs; de/reinstalling the cd rom, but nada...

Anyone have similar problems? What to do?... HELP

Right click MyComputer>properties>go to the hardware tab folder. Now click the + beside DVD\CD-Rom drives. Locate your DVD\CD-Rom, right click and then click "scan for any hardware changes".

Thanks Shoey - I scanned for any hardware changes, but it changed nothing... same error messages.

Would it help to completely de/reinstall the hardware?

If you know what your doing, take the one panel off so you can check for any loose ide cables. Be sure your system configuration is set correctly (master and slave)=Primary& Secondary ide channels.. This happened to be 1 time on WinXP and the only way I could get the drive working again was to flash the drive with right firmware. Please post the name brand and model of your DVD-Rom just in case.

It is an LG DVD (16x)

I'll check the cables, but I don't know how to flash the drive.

    Thx.

Other options you have is to insert your Windoze disc and repair and see if that fixes the problem. The other is to do a complete format (blah). I don't like posting info about flashing drives in your inexperienced because flashing drives with wrong firmware could damage the drive, make it dysfunctional.

I checked the cables and everything is fine. My DVD has power but won't read anything without the drivers, so I can't use my Windows disk...

Know any good sites where I could learn about flashing? Any other ideas...

    Thx

Thanks Shoey - I tried everything and eventually gave up and reinstalled it all...

At least it prompted me to set up a new partition on my hard drive and back everything up...for next time.

    Cheers
