I have an HP Pavillion Laptop dv5120us with a duel layer light scribe 8x drive. It won't burn DVD's and reads any blank one as a blank CD. I've tried +,+duel layer, all at the right speeds, (with nothing else running) different brands, ect. Plus, in My Compter it reads it as a BLANK CD Recordable. It plays CDs AND DVDs fine. I've always had problems with duel layer disks for some reason, I would get an error message Burn Failed then I would try the Disk again and it would work fine, not even DVD+R will work. Tried restore and that's not working either, but I hadn't installed anything or changed any settings before the problem happening. Tried my main burner, Nero along with a few free trial ones I just downloaded. I tried to look for firmware updates, but there weren't any on hp.com. If, I really have to I'll format my hard drive as a last resort. I was planning on turning VHS tapes into DVDs for Christmas presents. You don't have to read this part if you don't want to: The first tech support guy clled himself "Joe" moved my mouse around in circles for 15 minutes and I had to finally show him how to work nero. He told me to buy DVD-R disks. +R worked for me in the past and if it says it is supposed to burn +R that is what I paid for. Then he said it was a software issue and that I would have to pay. I asked for his suppervisor, he said he was on the phone and would call me right back...3hours later I kept trying to get a supervisor and being put on hold for sometimes 30 minutes at a stretch and getting disconnected time after time. I talked to "Mike", "Tom", ect all wih Indian accents I couldn't understand. Then I got a supervisor who wasn't nice to me. He told me to do a system resore then after it didn't work he didn't know what to tell me. He said it was "Fine" and kept putting me on hold . When I asked his name HE TOLD ME IT WAS "SAM IRAQ". I asked for his supervisor or his name and he said he had none. I asked him who he reported to and he said no one. I told him unless you own HP you report to someone, he said "I don't have to tell you that information." That was the end of the conversation. Suggestions please, thanks. P.S. Don' t get offended if I don't respond after today till possibly the end of this week. I'll be having surgery tomorrow. So, for today that was supposed to be my distraction.
I have an Hp pavillion laptop let's do this have you checked the hp website for any new updates to your laptop? they also post firmware updates for the dvd/cd drives and bios of the motherboard. I would start there and next time you need help don't call use the online chat at the hp support site I get much better help there than calling those guys know less than a newbie on this site. Yet for some reason the chat help seem much better at doing the job and resolving issues.
Did you just buy new +R media like 16X. Your drive may need a firmware update to handle the newer discs. Can you find an old disc from the ones that worked? If you have DVD Decrypter, then check your drive there and it will send you to the firmware site which should give you the firmware update if there is one.
Gamoon, I got DVD Decrypter 3.5, how can I use it to check for a firmware update? Would it show more than HP's site?
yes it will here is how open the program click on tools then go to firmware updates that will lead you to a site with updates for various drives.
Thanks garmoon, but it couldn't find antytthing for my drive. What brand is my drive? All I get are these letters HL-DT-ST GSA-4084N Thanks So Much
Probably a Hewlett-Packard. Go into your Device Manager and get the actual # listed there for the drive: Once you get that, go here and find the correct drive firmware. http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Look...-001&h_query=DVD+Writer&submit.x=4&submit.y=4
Hi Fast Frank, but what I gave (HL-DT-ST GSA-4084N ) is exactly what's listed in device manager. I can find my model laptop in their updates section, but it doesn't have an updated firmware to solve my problem. Thanks
Your drive is an LG, but I can't seem to find it listed in any of the web pages that list firmware or drives: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters...om=&bdrom=&orderby=Name&hits=50&Search=Search or: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php or: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Firmware/Home.aspx or: http://tdb.rpc1.org/ and this is very interesting read about your drive: http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=38128&sid=b3d185720cb972b0d33902e3182072db
I just wanted to let everyone know that through a combination of your sugesstions, my friend telling me to reinstall ASPI, and getting a newer version of Nero, My Drive IS Now Working! Thank You Everyone
I can understand his feelings of being pi__ed off. I use to get that form tech support from my old ISP. I just hope he (now that the issue is solved) enjoys his computer and the burning he can now do (Merry christmas to him and all the people he's turning those VHS discs into DVD discs for).
If we here members of afterdawn worked those tech support lines people would be better served Merry Christmas to all and to all Feiz Navidad
