Alright so i'm not entirely sure this is the proper place to be posting this but you guys have helped me out quite a bit in the past and i have no idea what to do. about six months ago, windows just stopped loading. every time i'd turn on my computer (an HP dv6409) i'd get the same error message saying it needed to run a disk check. so i'd let it run and all i'd get is the same error message on a loop (pictured below). I replaced my hard drive and RAM, and even went so far as to attempt a clean install of vista. that failed on my laptop, but worked on a different one. I decided to try and install windows 7 to see if there was maybe just an issue with the drivers. i installed 7 just fine on my laptop and it ran just fine for about an hour before my hard drive started loudly clicking and beeping for about three minutes before another crash. i've tried running start up repair but after several hours there doesn't seem to be any progress being made. i'm not sure if this is a software issue (involving the drivers) or a hardware issue (motherboard maybe?) but before i spend any more money on this i'd like to see if one of you fine folks can help me. any and all help that can be provided is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Hard drives shouldn't click and beep. If you're certain it was the HDD making that noise, replace it. That error on the screen is rather unusual though.
i would say it is a motherboard issue with the hard drive controller. i presume laptop is out of warranty?
unfortunately yes. and would it surprise you to learn that the trouble started about two months after the warranty expired AND that circuit city (which i purchased a protection plan from) would go under a mere six days prior?
I haven't seen a timebombed laptop in a while, I'd imagine it's just coincidence. A bit of research should prove either way.
