Help needed

Got a present of a Eurovox EX1000SL I knew it was some kind of reciever,out of ignorance I said thanks it's just what I wanted.I feel embarrased asking if anyone would explain to me in laymans terms what it does and how do I make it do whatever it is supposed to do,one of my hobbies is searching the skies for satelites that want me to look at them to get a little more knowledge,my favoured recievers are Technomates 1000ci and 1500 ci's with a fortek star 80cm motorised dish
