I got a Sony DRX-510UL external burner yesterday that burns in all four formats. I try to make a copy of a commercial DVD that I had bought, using a trial version of DVD XCopy Xpress. After it copied, i tried to play the copy in my home DVD player (the one hooked up to my tv). It just kept saying insert disk. I also tried playing it in the DVD ROM on my laptop and it wouldn't recognize the copy. The only place it the copy would play was in my DVD burner. Should I use a bland DVD-R? What format should be used to burn copies to work in most home DVD players? Thanks, I am new at this and very confused, especially since my burner will burn to DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and I am not sure what each format is for.
Try using DVD Shrink to squeeze the DVD down to under 4.6 gig then burn with Nero 6 (ordecent burning software). I have found that the media is a little flaky if you don't use high quality media . People on this site seem to favor Ritek G04 , I use DVD+R. Plus try and check what your stand alone player is compatible with. I bet you thought I was going to be easy , I did.
I did it by trial and error ! But I amm sure I have seen a link in other threds have a quick look through
DVD-R is compatible with the most standalones. Use the highest quality media you can whilst not throwing money away. Ritek G04 are a good balance between quality and cost.
HI ccohen, X Copy express handles the proper format for you, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. The problem is probably the +R -R issue in media. some desktop players only play -R, some only +R and if your lucky some play both. There could also be an issue with RW media. Check your player books for what they will accept and use that. Your burner will always play what it burns if there isn't a burn error. RW media can be re-written over and over. +R -R is one time only. Not much difference in them burning, but the machine you use to playback is where it has to be right. If you can't find your books on your players, go to dvdrhelp.com. They have a section on machine compatability and media. Jerry
hey there ash...i have dvd shrink and nero 6 but not exactly sure on what to do in dvd shrink to get it down to 4.75 gig. i don't know which files to copy over.can you help me??
pistol32, click re-author in 1st shrink window(second window opens).Select all files from 1st window and drag to second. You can then delete anything you don't want before you click backup. As you delete items, compression gets better, total size gets smaller. Jerry
Pistol32 DVD Shrink splits the disc into 3 to 4 groupings. Menus - Movie - Extras - Other Go the the movie folder after selecting re-author and copy the items in the folder to the new window. You now have the core movie. You can unselect the subtitles and other languages in the audio section to maximize the space for the movie. If you wish you can add more features or you can backup. After backing up burn it with Nero
Exactly correct , you can also use the start/stop to get rid of company title and end credits to trim further
