I don't have any sound on my computer for a couple of days now....I think my driver is hosed......under control panel/sound devices/ volume is all greyed out, has anyone encountered a problem like this?

I does sound like a driver problem. Look in Device Manager and see if there are any yellow exclamations sighs(overlying a yellow question sign) where your Sound, video and Game Controllers icon is. Expand this tree and mouse over your sound card Driver then right click for properties. Note the comment in the Device stats box. It'll tell you if the sound card is working properly or not. If you saw the yellow exclamation sign then this last step was redundant since you would have already known this. You can click on the driver tab above in the present menu and re-install your sound card drivers. Many ways to re-install your drivers, chose whichever route is comfortable for you.
