help on Sony burner

hi all,

my question is about the sony "direct" stand alone burner. i want to archive a bunch of vhs,8mm, and sports games off my tivo.
does this machine do what it advertises? just plug in your source and then hit record... i would rather hear success stories or even horror stories before instead of flipping a coin. Sorry to drag this out but dvds that are recorded are they computer friendly? meaning can i just record dvds i compiled? or do i have to record multiple times from the same source i.e. vhs 8mm digital???
