What does the error message say?

See if you can boot up in Safe Mode. If you can, go back to a previous restore point.

Agree with GrandpaBW but if that still doesn't work, time to re-install XP on your PC. Doing that as a re-install should not wipe out what you had before, just correct what is missing or deleted preventing the startup.

Boot with your XP CD and there should be a repair option.
Stop:0x00000024 means there is a problem with the NTFS driver for reading the NTFS file system. A repair from the boot cd should fix the ntfs.sys file if it is corrupt.

Once you get into the recovery console, type chkdsk c: /f
That runs chkdsk and the /f tells it to fix errors it finds. It may take a long time.

Obviously you have computer access, so check this link
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822800

It describes how to replace your ntfs.sys file with a copy from the original cd. Follow step by step, and it HOPEFULLY will solve your troubles.

    Report back with any updates.

    Good luck

you could just do a fresh reinstall of XP as this is easier than using the recovery console just make sure you dont wipe the hard drive and select the option to use the existing folders and delete the current installation this way you wont lose all your files but youll still have a nice fresh install of XP
