I was wondering if anyone can please assist with this conundrum. It appears that I am having a playback issue with DVD-r disks that have been burned with Nero. I am using Nero version 6.3.1.20 and have had very few problems with it to date. However, it is now appearing that when usin RITEK media (dvd-r 8x printable) that a playback issue is happening. I am using shrink and anydvd in front of Nero. When I burn the disk there is no indication of a burn error - and the burn completes properly - at any speed from 2x to 8x. I am using a plextor PX-712A burner which has performed flawlwssly with other media. As I said earlier, the burn goes well and completes with no apparent problem. When playback happens however, the movie hangs up on or about the 6th or 7th or 8th chapter on the disk. It doesn't matter which player I use (I have 3 of them), it hangs up. I have checked the approved media list for the drive (and the players) and the Ritek media I am using is supposed to be approved. I have tried dvdclone as well and still the same situation on playback. Has anyone experienced this issue before? Can anyone give any suggestions on how to resolve this issue? I still have a good number of disks to use and I would rather not continue to burn coasters with them. Thanks for your help Nitram
Thanks for offering to assist. Can you explain how I can get the log? When the Shrink/Nero process is finished I don't see the information box offering me the ability to same the log as I do when I use Nero by itself to burn disks. If you can point me to the omethod df capturing the log I will copy it and post it. Thanks, Nitram

Bingo... First off, remove your serial #, it is at the top of your log and begins with 1A23. We don't want anyone stealing it now do we. Now for the first problem, two things here are ancient. Update Nero...current version is 6.6.0.18 Your firmware is about four updates behind as well, current version for your drive is 1.07 and can be found here: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=38 This well also probably fix this , because Nero is not recognizing your drive. DMA should be on for all drives. Set your target size to 4300, you are attempting to burn too close to the edge of the disc. I see you are using Ritek discs which are generally considered pretty good. The above are all the big problems I see and correcting them will more than likely get you burning again in two shakes of a lambs tail. I almost forgot...don't burn at more than half the rated speed of your media.
hello Locoeng. Thanks again for your suggestions previously. I tried all of your suggestions and here are the results: - I updated my firmware for the Plextor 712A burner to v1.07; - I updated my version of Nero to 6.6.0.18; - I reinstalled DVD Shrink; - I checked my DMA settings; - I ensured that I burned at 2 or 4 speed: After trying to backup my movies again on Ritek DVD (G 05 media), I am still getting the same results. The messaging coming back when the burn is finished indicates that the burn was successful and there are no errors on the disc. However I have inspected the resulting disc more closely and it appears that there are "lines" or "spaces" on the burned side of the disc. These "lines" appear darker in colour; it is as if the burner either skipped when burning or overwrote some areas again. I don't know how to explain it any other way. At any rate, the resulitng disc will not play and if I attempt to burn from it I get a CRC error message. Also, when checking the DMA setting on my computer, I find that DMA IS set properly, although when I look at the Nero log, it shows that it is not. Can't figure out why it is like that. Additionally, the 'Bus Type' statement has not changed either. I have not changed the target size yet as this setting works well with all other media. When I use Taiyo Uden media, there are no problems at all - clean burns and smooth playback on all players - standalone and pc. I have also checked the most recent media listing from Plextor for my drive and have discovered an inconsistency - my owners guide for the burner does not list Ritek media as approved for the drive, but on Plextor's web site, it shows it on the list but does not have a 'recommended' comment on the listing. Anyway, those are the results of your suggested ammendments. I appreciate your thoughts and pointers. Do you have any other suggestions? I would be happy to hear them.
LOL, I would just use the cream of the crop then....I've read a thread or two recently about a few bad batches of Riteks. Maybe you just got a bum splindle, but at least all of your progs and hardware are now current. Try uninstalling your drivers in Device Manager for your optical drive and then restart your PC. XP should automatically detect the appropriate drivers and reinstall them for you. This may take care of your DMA issues. Good luck with those TY's.
Here's a handy little DMA restoration guide for you, I had to check myself a little. http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/checking DMA.pdf
Hello Locoeng, Thanks for your note. LOL, I have come to that conclusion as well. I have no problem using the TY's but would have liked to possibly save some $$$ on media by using the Riteks. Thanks too, for the DMA guide. I will read that through and see what can be done on that front. I have noticed also on my friend's computer (also using Windows media edition) this his Nero log shows that the drives are not recognized and the DMA is shown off as well. Strange for sure... Thanks again for your assistance, it is much appreciated... Nitram
