i have been using an atapi cd-rw 52x max for quite some time now
and recently got a benq dvd dual dw1610

i am not having any issues burning dvd movies

    however

i can no longer burn music cds with nero
the only option i have is either a image file or to use the cd burner
    so i choose cd burner
and i get the following error:

This is the oldest version of Nero I've seen since I started...try to update from here
    http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Your firmware is way behind, update from here to B8V9
    http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DVDRW/DW1610/B8V9.zip

    Excellent choice of discs.

This is Roxio, it conflicts with Nero so I would run this zapper to remove it http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

You can still use those 2 programs. Open Shrink, click on edit>>preferences>>I/O and you get this, check the box that says burn with Nero, dont need Roxio.

    @missnell
Some other reasons for a power calibration error can be the drives sharing a power connector or the drive configuration.
Since this problem with Nero started with install of the new drive you should check those also.
The BenQ is set to master on the seconardy ide channel and the cd writer as slave - the correct way. Make sure the jumpers on the drives are set this way too. If not set correctly may cause a conflict.
The firmware Gwen linked to is just for the BenQ - good to keep up to date.

Nope - it's actually on the back of the drive (jumper). I'm thinking since you just installed the BenQ the Atapi may be set to master and/or there's a shared power connection that is giving it problems.
You may want to check it out.
As Gwen said Shrink will autoburn w/ Nero. But it needs Nero Burning Rom. Express won't do it but the update may have given you burning rom.

    ahh i dono
theres a ribbon ( i think thats what its called ) and some wires back there and it runs from one to the other
and theres a weee lil wired cord from the benq down to the mother board??? maybe

(( like i said im not good at this ))

anywho the nero update did give me a nero burning rom

and express now allows me to burn music and pic cds with the benq selected - so it doesnt matter to me which one does it as long as one of them does lol

so i could maybe remove the cd burner and put in the cd rom? or...

Great to hear you're back in business...dont tempt fate, leave things as they are...only my opinion, Cheers.

When you burn movies, burn at 4X, CDs between 24X and 32X..DONT use anything made by CMC Mag, especially memorex.

Your log shows the cables (the ribbon you see) are right - just maybe the back of the drive the jumpers may not be right. You would have to disconnect & take out the drive(s) out to check this.
Now the power connectors come directly off the power supply. One connector for one drive. They usually come with a few.
Let me see if I can find a guide.

Putting the rom back in - up to you. If the atapi reads dvd's also I would just check the settings. Nice to have a reader and writer.
Maybe you know some one who can do this for you that you trust :)

    the atapi doesnt read dvds

i believe, but correct me if im wrong, to chg it to the cd rom ( as i know someone who could use the atapi )
is it just a matter of going into device mgr and uninstalling the atapi
power off the pc and d/c the atapi, and hook up the cd rom in its place
power back on and allow windows to read the rom???

Here's a link for you - check out 8 for configuration and 9 for more on the power calibration error.
    http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm
Imo it's better to have everything set up right but I won't mess around with the configs and wires unless you are comfortable doing it.
Since you can burn now w/ the BenQ get someone you trust who is comfortable doing it.

Sorry didn't see your post b/4 I hit reply.
Yep do it that way. On the back of the rom place the jumper pin to slave. Put the rom in the place of the atapi and let windows do it's thing!

i think i found the error???

ok so benq is in my top slot
it is hooked up to a wired cord with 4 small prongs for analog audio
    master black red and white
and the black end of the ribon
and the end cord of the dc input 4 large prongs black yellow and red wires
    WAS slave -

then the ataip was the grey middle of the ribbon
and the middle of that dc input cord
    WAS master

if i switch the benq to master and the atapi to slave it should work (( or i can put the cd rom in its place ))

in your opinion is it easier wear and tear wise on the dvd burner to leave the cd burner there for my music and cd burning and just use dvd burner for dvds or let the dvd burner burn everything and put the cdrom in ??

Depends - if the cdrom by chance also reads dvd's then I'd put that in to read from instead of using the dvd drive for everything.
If not just change the jumper pins and leave the atapi in to burn cd's.

Your other connections sound right - your using a 80 ide cable (ribbon) with the power connection and audio. Master is the top (black) and slave is the middle (gray) with the blue end in the motherboard.
