Hi my drive is a oem (NEC) LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-4165B . I'm running XPHomeSP2. The problem is this. After windows has loaded, when I attempt to access the drive it says "Please insert a disk into drive D:." the status light doesn't turn on either and I cant eject the drive from My Computer. I've tries to update the firmware however the firmware program cannot see any target drive (I am sure it's the right firmware). It also cant be accessed from command prompt.

However, the part that really has me confused is that it loads perfectly fine when the computer is turned on if a boot disk or windows installation disk is put in. In addition Device Manager says there is a problem with the driver (have tried reinstalling) however I see no way of fixing it.

    Any help much appreciated.

I'm afraid I have to disagree with you. LG aren't horrible. They're not favoured. There new drives are bad, granted. But i own a 12x LG burner, which I use as my primary burner on principle, and is v good. Not one coaster, laser is fine! I will defend this drive, as long as I have it.
What was wrong with your burner BTW? Maybe it's you ;)

You might want to try to uninstall it , reboot and reinstall it. LG makes good drives - NEC/MadDog are the best in my opinion. Good luck with your burner and happy burning.

Thanks for the replies. As i mentioned I cannot update the firmware ("target drive not found"), and reinstalling doesn't help.

Can it be broken if it boots?

Try cleaning your laser. Take a cotton bud with some rubbing alcohol on and rub the laser in little circles for 10 secs. Then, with the dry end, rub for another ten secs.

Also, as pernal said, go to hardware manager, uninstall you drive, then reboot your PC. Windows will auto reinstall it for you.

    See if those help.
Otherwise I'd say your drive is on the blink and needs replacing :(

What explanation could there be for it working at boot but not windows proper?

Try running a virus/spywares scan. Apart from that I don't know to be honest. It's news to me...
