Hey guys; just bought a new Linsys router and was crappy to find out that it doesn't even seem to work.. I followed the exact instructions that it told me to do; but I think it just might be defective. Here's why: I plugged it in exactly as they showed; but when I click on Mozilla Firefox; it says 'no connection- please try again'.....here's the kicker though: all of the indicating lights on it show that the connection is stable and active; even though the internet just farts on me when I try to access it.. I've even tried just plain going into the router's settings; but that doesn't even want to load; to top it off; the set up wizard on the CD-ROM that came with the router didn't work for crap because it will get to the point where it says 'checking your computer's settings' ; then ask for a password--when I type in the password (it's admin) it just keeps repeating that same exact step as if it's a broken record...So; if you've got any ideas on how I can get this thing to connect me and my other computer to the internet; I would be greatly appreciated; tia; Halen5150 P.S. press the reset button on the router. check router manual for location. disconnect modem power & coax cable/telephone cable, count 15 secs & reconnect cables. restart computer. what windows are you using? do you have the cable from modem plugged into the wan connector & the cable from the computer into the lan connector in the router??
pass is admin and the user name is left blank also just do it manually just type 192.168.1.1 on firefox and enter the router and config it
If you have not yet power cycled your modem, that is your problem. Once you disconnect it from your PC and hook it up to the router, the modem needs to be rebooted. Power cycle and you should be OK. ~Rich
@ddp and doubledwn well; I returned the one router thinking it was defective and ended up getting one of the same hoping it would work. Well; turns out that I got another POS so I'm gonna return that one too and get a d-link router.... What happened with the new one I got was the same as the other; the setup wizard sucks. so; I'll return this one and get a d-link and see how those work; because right now my experience with Linksys routers is BAD; if i had a gun I'd shoot the CEO of Linksys!!!LOLL
i prefer linksys wired routers which i'm using at the moment as you normally just plug & play it. also you haven't answered my questions in my 1st post.
ddp; 1. I am also using a wired router; to be exact; this is the BEFSR41... 2. I tried doing what you said in your first post and it didn't work for me... Also; I KNOW that I have it plugged in right because I've looked too many times at the instructions to know now how to hook these things up by heart..... Lastly; the internet isn't the only thing I can't connect to; when I type in that 192.168.1.1 ; I still get a 'can't find server' or 'server is taking too long to respond' P.S. I tried all of these methods mentioned here through firefox and internet explorer and still no luck... Lastly--ddp; since you've got it working; I'm curious to know exactly how you got your router working; because every tech support place I go to ; they just give me the same answer or their solution just doesn't work tia; Halen5150 P.S. Also; tomorrow I think i'll be exchanging this Linksys router anyway for a D-Link just because I'm fed up with all of this crap--I mean; come on; all I wanna do is split an internet connection between 3 computers...is that too much to ask???....
you need to start right at the beginning - follow the instructions (Linksys's and ddp's) to the letter. It sounds like you're doing something wrong as you're not connecting to the router in the first instance, so sods law says the same will happen with a D-Link.... What you need to check/do is set your LAN connection to the same range as the router expects ie if the Linksys is 192.168.1.1 then your network connection (wired) needs to be 192.168.1.2 or whatever, without that 'route' to the router you're not going anywhere....
Has anybody checked to see if he is set up to get an IP automatically? @Halen5150: What is your IP address on the computer? Is it set up to get its IP automatically, or are you specifying one? Dont use the stupid CD that came with it. I have never used one for router setup (just like most of the tech guys/gals here). If you need help checking/changing the IP settings, post back and we'll talk you through it. ~Rich
@Doubledwn Hey; much love for the reply man Anyway; to answer your question; no, i am not getting an ip address automatically; the current ip I have is the one that my isp gave me; and i'm pretty sure they assigned a static one. (as opposed to dynamic). Hope this helps you Halen5150
OK, your router is going to assign your PC a private IP address for your home LAN. Your router is the device that will get your dynamically assigned IP from your ISP. So, you need to tell windows to allow the PC to receive its IP[ automatically. Try this. Go to Control Panel>Network Connections You should see a Local Area Connection that says its connected. Right click and go to properties. Under "This connection uses the following items:", highlight "Internet Protocol TCP/IP" and click properties. What should be checked is "Obtain an IP address automatically", along with "Obtain DNS Server automatically". Once you change these to "obtain", reset your router (unplug/plug back in). Wait for about a minute. Then go to start>run> and type 'cmd' (no quoutes). In the command prompt box, type "ipconfig /all" (again, no qoutes). Under your Local Area Connection, you should have an IP address that should be 192.168.X.X, where the X's vary depending on the maker of the router. If you have this, then power cycle the modem and see if the internet works. Let me know if you get stuck at any time during this. ~Rich

OK, so I misunderstood a bit. Regardless, we need to get you connected to the router first, so follow the above steps inrelation to changing the IP and DNS to obtain automatically. Once we get the router to assign you an IP address, we can go into the router config page and manually enter the IP config that your ISP gave you. Baby steps, my man, baby steps.
