    one of my computer won't boot for some reason
    no new hardware, software or updates before this happen
    so I don't know what's the cause
    and this is a really new computer with dual core 3.0G
    ram = 1GB and X850XT graphic card

    The computer goes all the way to the windows loading logo thing and after that:
    1. screen goes black and stay there forever
    2. sometimes it even restart the computer

    choosing to boot from last known good setting has the same effect
    choosing to boot in safe mode the computer hang after a couple of lines pointing to some windows system32 files (it won't even get to the logo thing)

    if the problem can't be solve the only option is to format everything
    will choosing "repair" from the boot disc works if I don't want to lose all the data in the hard drive?

    You can do a repair installation.

    During XP setup, you'll be given this option after pressing F8 to accept the EULA. Don't use the Recovery Console.

    After you're done, you'll have to reinstall:

    Chipset
    Video
    Sound
    XP updates.

    @pringless: This souns like a typical memory chip error. Pull the memory, clean the contacts and try again. If not, try replacing the mem module with a known good one.
