Can anyone point me in the right direction to getting an AVI2DVD converter. The only ones I've been able to find you have to install through the terminal, and I'm not exactly use to the terminal yet on Linux. Does anyone know where I can find a simpler to install converter, or a place where I can learn how to use the terminal better?

But I will let you into a secret.. don't expect the real power tools like ffmpeg and mencoder to be like windows.. a pretty little box with buttons and all the decisions made for you, because it ain't going to happen!.. get used to the command line.. you will need to. this http://afterdark13.11.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?t=75 is a really good example of how to use the terminal to do dvd and video work. now about installing applications.. ubuntu you say? sudo apt-get install <program> or the synaptic package manager.. also turn on the universe and multiverse repositories and add the contrib and non free repos to your sources.list file. while you are in there you need to add proper multimedia capability too.. add this line somewhere deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main .. that may be something else.. check the site.. you may need testing or lenny or even sid instead of etch depending on the build of ubuntu you are on.
Hmm...well I'm a total noob with the terminal, so...I'll look through all that, but won't try nothing yet. I'm going to read up a little more on it, so I don't mess anything up.
Don't worry.. it's pretty easy to mess up a *nix system the first few times, and they still go crazy in the hands of experienced people (not usually our fault.. more to do with devs not testing packages against real world systems, a seemingly trivial file update can cause all sorts of headaches.. nearly always related to jack or amarok... or we try to do crazy things with them) Here's the ubuntu software howto https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware and enabling universe and multiverse (not default) https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu Personally I'm not too keen on syanptic and use apt instead https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AptGetHowto and I would suggest getting the "build-essentials" package too. Glad to help-.. Took me ages to get to grips with dvd on linux. One thing you may be interested in.. There is a tool which does the same as dvd-shrink.. It's called xdvd-shrink (google or apt-cache search).. and for some really good stuff.. converters and things check here.. http://www.rarewares.org/debian.php not obscure enough yet?? http://www.rjamorim.com/rrw/index.html There you go.. now you should be able to do just about anything with anything :lol:

I'm expecting it causing some problems with stability of other things. System is running a BSD kernal with ext3 modules compiled in and an ext3 filesystem. All applications from debian lenny (testing) Machine name "debian" to save reconfiguring my network. And that's why I don't like installing KDE applications on GDM systems.
Never had any such problems installing on my system, which is a Gnome base. Could the errors you are seeing be a symptom of bad packaging? Works like a dream under Arch, handles encrypted discs without breaking a sweat and the girlfriend had no problems with learning to use it, so ticks all the boxes for me. Only problem is that it doesn't install an icon in the menu under Gnome (being a KDE app), but alacarte makes it easy to add one in any case.
Ahh.. arch has the kde-base packages installed by default. I built this from the ground up trying to not have all the clutter and possible conflicts. I found that the problem is... no KSycoca database, but as I don't want to put all the kde libs in without actually using the desktop I think I will give this one a miss.. I can rip anything from the command line anyway. Looks like a good program after installing and testing it on a Kubuntu system earlier today.. As usual 2 linux (can mine be called linux??) systems have very big differences, what works on one doesn't work so well on another. Think I will have a look at the source and see if there is any way to be rid of this obviously not too important dependency on a missing database file, because after some path tweaking and drive configuring I managed to get it working well after the startup complaining. Added to the gnome menus it failed to start with a segmentation fault, but |I haven't had time to strace it properly.. probably the same missing file error.
There is also an app called DeVeDe (DVD gedit???lol??) It is a reasonable avi2dvd converter (and will also do VCD,SVCD). It will convert a 700MB avi to DVD compliant (eother .ISO or audio & video TS folders) in about 2 hrs (on my rig anyway). speed (like all video apps) is dependant on your CPU speed. Not sure if it is in the ubuntu repos (it is in the Etch ones), search synaptic or sudo apt-get install devede
