I bought some TDK DVD-R disks today and wanted to burn some .avi movies. Some of them have subtitles hard-encoded and some have them soft-encoded with the .srt/.sub file in the same folder. Do I need to do anything to make the soft-encoded movies work on my DVD player?
Also, all of my backed-up movies are about 700MB, so can I put multiple movies on one disk? If so, how? And for the burning software, should I use Imgburn?

A DivX certified, standalone player wants to see the subtitles with the same name as the associated video:
    myvideo.avi
    myvideo.srt

    - the subs are turned on and off using the remote.

You can add movies to the capacity of the disk.
They will be listed on a menu screen for selection using the remote.

Use ImgBurn and choose 'Write files/folder to disc' at the initial screen.
Add the .avi and .srt files as required.

Will that work for .sub files as well?

If you are referring to SUB/IDX files - yes.
    Rename them myvideo.sub and myvideo.idx
