i have done some looking around the fourms but without much help. I am intersted in buying an external burner for my lap top. I found a Memorex 16x External USB 2.0 and FireWire Double-Layer DVD±RW/CD-RW and was wondering if this was a good burner, if not could anyone tell me something that is

considering memorex makes horrible media, I wouldn't trust it. Good brands are Lite-On, Plextor, Pioneer, TDK, and Sony

    Hi thormotox ,

Of course like everything Memorex has their name on that deals with DVD Video, isn't made by Memorex but by someone else. Memorex may be made by one company today and, another tomorrow, and I find that difficult to deal with.

I would suggest either NEC or Plextor as excellent burners.

REASON: They have an excellent reputation and excellent support. Also you can change Book types with either drive when you're using +R media. If you don't change book types as a rule then I would suggest the Pioneer 109. I have the 109 and it has performed flawlessly since it's purchase 9 months ago.

The only DL burner I would caution against would be any HP model as they have a growing list of issues since coming out with their DL line and aren't to be trusted.

A final note: Buy a 2.0 USB connected burner as it will provide a faster transfer speed than a firewire. Me ? I like my transfer speed high :D)

    Cheers,

    Pete

I've noticed that most new externals have both USB 2.0 and firewire, which is nice. but is there THAT much of a speed difference between the two? firewire is 400 Mb, which would be 50 MB, correct? and USB 2.0 is 480 Mb, which is 60MB. I guess an extra 10MB per second would be good if it was an external HD, but CD and DVD drives don't come close to even 50 MB per second...
