The orig drive in my xbox is a phillips, and it would not read recordable DVD's or CD's I pulled it apart to do the POT tweak and adjusted the DVD laser pot down to 400 from around 890 and the CD laser pot to 900 from 1200. CD's are perfect now, but DVD recordable media while better is still flaky. I am worried about going much lower on the adjustment because I don't want to smoke this DVD player as it is teh best working one I have.

So, I purchased a Samsung 616 from Ebay, and modded it. It too had trouble with CD-R's and DVD-R's so I attempted to adjust its lasers. Again, I was able to get the CD laser working, but the DVD I adjusted from 980 all the way to 40 and still this samsung will not read DVD recordable media. Standard OEM DVD's work fine.

So for now I put back in the Phillips, but here are my questions.

Should I try and go lower on the Phillips laser?

If I smoke the philips, in your opinion should I buy a replacement phillips laser or a new Samsung laser? The samsung laser is an SOH-D16. Is there an upgraded laser for either drive that will give me good performance across the board?

    Thanks,
    -J
