I had been trying to burn a dvd for the past few days and with no luck. I have been reading up and have come to find that I think my dvd burner doesn't support dvd-r's. I had burned a few movies already onto dvd+r's with no problem. I thought it was no big deal using the -r's, but after many failed attempts and many program downloads, as well as a lot of research and reading, I have come to the conclusion that I might need a firmware update. I have no idea what I am supposed to download and I have read that if you mess up you can fry your burner. So if anyone can give me some advice I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!!!

    Hi stimpy727
    Welcome to aD

Need the make and model of your burner. Firmware update it;s that bad - usually very easy and only takes a few minutes.
But let's check out the specs on the burner.

What programs have you used to burn?

It is an NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A. I have used Nero and 1 click DVD. They worked for the DVD+R's that I had burned, but not for the DVD_R's. Here is the Log I copy and pasted it below. It makes no sense to me, but maybe to you it might. Thanks so much!!

    stimpy727 ,
Below is the NEC 1300 firmware page. That burner is at least 4 years old as I have one also but I do not use it and have not for 2+ years. Burning the newer media will be problems as NEC is not writing firmware updates for that burner so the burner does not recog that blank media. I really suggest you get another NEC burner so you can use the newer blank media. You do have other errors but the burner is the main problem

1st thing - Edit out your serial at the top of the log too - begins w/ 1C.

Your drive does support both formats - just doesn't like the Sony 16x media you're using - try the firmware update that Car.Mike linked you to. There are instructions on how to update it.

Nero & Roxio don't always play well. Uninstall Roxio and run the clean tool.
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

Biggest problem here is like Car.Mike said. Older drive w/ the firmware no longer updated to handle the newer media.
8x media would be better if you can find it.

    Hi there,

If someone could please tell me if i need a [/bold] firmware update[bold] for my dvd-writer as i had a burn error & the last time that happened i visited the firmware update page
( when i was still relatively new to this) =

    TOSHIBA CD/DVDW SDR5372V>Version: TU15
    File version = 1, 3, 9, 0
Description = Firmware Update Utility for Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Optical Disc Drive
    Created = Monday, October 03, 2005, 1:39:36 PM

As i have already visited these links: but can someone reassure me if i need an update:

    http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2125

    http://hijacker.rpc1.org/toshiba/index.php?path=SD-R5372V/

Its ironic that it happened[bold]a year today[bold] after it was created!!

Thanks a lot as it would be much appreciated.

    @Norm9

It looks like you have the latest firmware.

In your Nero log file, it contains the serial number. Edit out your serial number so nobody can steal it.

    @nasayin

Thanks for gettin back to me on that!
As i had forgot to add the last letter V when i was checkin it up, i came up with TU56,57 & when i did, i just wanted to be reassured about it anyway. As im still relatively new to anythin happenin to the pc.

As i had used TuffDisc DVD-R 8x it had failed twice, but brought it down to 4x & had worked! will it work with 6x as well but not 8x?

    As a matter of query:
I know my way around DvdShrink & other things, but you're still a newbie to new things happenin!how long does it take for a newbie to get a hold of things & should i be lookin at other things in this forum, As when i registered it recognised me as a newbie/not like other forums where it doesnt.

    Regards,
    Norm9

    Hi Norm9
Check the manufacturer of the Tuff Discs - they use different manufacturers. Some good - some not.

Pop a disc in the drive. In Nero SmartStart go to ToolKit>Info Tool>disc tab. This will list the manufacturer id. Post this back.

They may do fine at 6x but when starting stick w/ half the rated speed of the media as the burn speed. Once you get more fimilar up it and see if that works for you and your set up.

Great media to use is Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. In store you can get Verbatim - for Taiyo look for made in japan only Sony or Fuji.

For how it will take to get the hang of it - well depends on the person. I did the ole trial & error thing :)
Sure look around the site - plenty to learn around here!

    Hi binky7

Thanks for how to get info on the manufacturer id (handy for lookin at other drives info!)which is = [bold]CMC MAG. AE1.[/bold]
Incidentally when i went to save the info about the manufacturer id didnt show up? whether its irrevelant or not i just thought i'd mention it!.

I have heard but not come across those yet as it varies on some shops, as i only come across Bulkpaq & Ridisc-(varies) but im still wary about those 2!

As the forum recognised me as a newbie, does it change on the number of posts/level of replies given?

Haha-if i had a pound/euro everytime someone said that to me i'd be half-rich changin it to Sterling-heh!

[bold]PS.[/bold]If i had any more problems would i revert to here for newbies postin here or somewhere else in the forum: for example backin-up a movie (i'll give details later)

Thanks a lot-the help much appreciated!

    Hey Norm9
Well those CMC are not very good. Ridisc and Bulkpaq also use different manufacturers so might want to avoid them too.
Think you're in the UK? You can try this site to buy Verb and Taiyo online:
    http://svp.co.uk/
    UK members here use them.

Your status increases as your post count does. Titles are just that titles based on post count. Think after 25 become junior, 100 + member, 500+ senior , 2500 + addict.

Whenever you have a problem you can post in the forum for it. Like if using Nero there is a Nero forum. Newbie forum is good too - kinda a catch all.

No problemo on the help :)
    Post back anytime :)

    Hi binkie7

    Cheers for info.
But who or what are CMC? I've come across the name a few times but never bothered me until now!

Im based in the ROI, but visit NIre sometimes.
    E15-50pk-Tuffdisc->(market-tradin) E22->Shops.

I've a long way to go for postin, but hope i enjoy it all the way.

But i suppose if i have any more postin i should really start a new thread.
For instance when i was checkin with the Nero infotool i also checked out Nero cddvd-speed & found out as well the manufacturer id
& got a screenshot of it for reference. But when i checked out a few other things i noticed to my horror [bold]
it showed the max speed is (locked) to 2x[/bold] so i checked out the speed settings on dvdshrink & it was greyed out
What happened? as i didnt notice it earlier unless somethin happened.
If you can shed some light on this or should i post this elsewhere?

How do u upload the speed pics as well:

    Regards
    Norm9

Ok let's see CMC are the manufacturer of discs. Just because they may be made by a brand name doesn't mean the brand actually made them (make sense?) or they are any good.
Some manufacturers are better than others when it comes to compatability and reliability on burns. CMC is not one of them.

Now the burn speed being locked at 2x - well that can mean that yiur drive doesn't like these discs. Not being enabled in Shrink could also be the same thing or the burner isn't picked as the backup target.
Post the pic and we can take a peek.

For pics you'll need to host them somewhere like photobucket.com (free). To post one when you hit 'reply' the instructions are right up above where you type your reply.

I think you'll like it here - I've been here for awhile :0)

    Hi binky7

CmC- should mean Crap-more-Crap (hope i dont get in trouble for that?)

Thanks for info on burn speed after changin the backup-target from Harddisk folder -> Burner, it wasnt greyed out & it showed in
Burn Settings the speed 8x all i can say is "happy days again" until the next time?

So thats how you upload the pics, as i thought it was 'add attachments' but this looks better but since the burn settin is fixed i dont think i need to upload unless you think i should.

Im gettin used to picture organisers (Picasa from Gmail/Google) as you can export pics as a html page as well but upload them to a webhost (hope ive got the term right)

    Thats a lot @ moment,
but if possible i'd like to backup the movie Scary Movie4 as well,

    Regards
    Norm9

PS im gettin used to these smilies -> :0)

    Hey Norm9
Sorry for the delayed response. Yesterday just wasn't my day :)

    CmC- should mean Crap-more-Crap
LOL - like the acronym :) Yep they have caused alot of burn errors or problems w/ playback.

You can post the pic of Nero CD-DVD Speed but I think your okay there.

You're fine talking about backing up a movie.
Which programs are you using? Or do you need recommends?

    Hi binky7

Got held up by accquainting myself with the site, its nice you can see all the posts on one page, instead of gettin lost in various pages when i clicked on 'list of updated threads'
& by lookin up the rules as well! ->http://tinyurl.com/yfzlct ->(handy thing i came across)

    Im usin DvdShrink3.2 + DvdDecrypter.
When you go to Open Files & click OK you get this dialog box appearin sayin DVD Shrink encountered an error & cannot continue. Invalid data in file "C:\...SM4OEW1\VTS_01_1.VOB"
Overlapped I\O operation is in progress

But i tried to Reauthor it as a movie & no extras, but no file sizes that big showed up in DvdShrink?

I've been usin both for a good while, til you come across S*ny dvd's as it happened one time with Seinfeld-S4-Disc4.

Well ya know what they say 'tomoro's another day'

PS.Is it ok continuin in this post?

    Regards
    Norm9

Shrink and decrypter are great programs but unfortunately they're no longer updated.
So the error you're getting is one of the ones you can get when Shrink can't handle the copy protection.
Think decrypter can on this one.
But to be on the safe side rip 1st w/ DVDFab Decrypter.
Then open those files in Shrink and let it do it's thing.

Not free but has a 21 day free trial is AnyDVD - just runs in the background w/ Shrink removing the copy protection.

Yeah the Sony and Disney movies have the newer copy protection on them but they can be beat too.

Another good free way to handle those is RipIt4Me. Uses Shrink and Decrypter also. Here's a guide and links to dl:
    http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/360110

Give one of those a go and let us know.

Hmmm since we're getting off topic of firmware if you have any other problems would be best to start a new thread.

Yeah i was thinkin of that, as i thought one of the mods would end up tellin/shiftin us anyway!

But first i'll reply to you & put this in a new thread for newbies!

I forgot to mention [bold]D'oh[/bold] i already had ripped the files to the HD w/ DvdDecrypter & if that fails i use DVDFab Decrypter.

Well i went to open those files & it didnt do a sweet thing, as that dialog box showed up as i mentioned earlier.

Is that the same as CloneDvd which i thought was difficult to understand, but really i didnt & wouldnt use it much in 21 days anyway! but couldnt reinstall it later as it recognised me!

I havent used RipIt4Me yet, but i'll try out the link & let you know & after that i'll post this in a new thread.
