I just brought a Plextor 740 external drive, but I'm having a hard time trying to get it to work. I installed the Nero 6.0 that comes with the burner. I connected with USB to my labtop, it seems everytime I turn on the burner Nero would say "Program not responding", but if I turn off the burner then Nero works again. I find this very strange, I need some help PLEASE! I had a external Pioneer 8x before and it works great with any version of the Nero.

    Hi.

Does your external Plextor work when Nero is not open. In other words, does it play back a DVD OK. Can you use it with other programs like DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink?

Do you have any other DVD authoring software installed like Roxio Easy Media Creator? That program and Nero do not get along well at all. If Roxio software is installed, uninstall it and run the Roxie Zapper:

The best version of Nero 6 seems to be version 6.6.0.18. To upgrade/downgrade (depending on the version you have) run the Nero 6 Clean Tool first taking care to write down your Nero Program Serial number.

You might as well run the Nero 6 Driver Clean Tool as well:

Version 6.6.0.18 is at this link:

    Package 1: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
    Package 2: http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

After uninstalling Nero and before reinstalling, see if the drive workswith other software and plays back DVDs and CDs. If so, reinstall Nero.

Thank you for your help! Yes, the drive works when Nero is not in use. Actually, I was able to copy disk using CloneDVD2 software. I havn't try other software yet. I'll try your idea when I get home tonite. I'll give a progress report tomorrow. Thanks!

I think I found the problem. My Sony laptop doesn't have a USB 2.0, and I believe is a lower version. I check on the device manager, USB controller doesn't say "Enhance", so I assume is not USB 2.0. I took the External drive to work (where there's a newer machine), installed Nero and was able to copy. So, I believe a PCMIA Card with USB 2.0 will solve this issue. Please confirm if I'm right? Thanks!

Yes, that seems to be the problem and yes a PCMCIA card with USB2 bus will do the job just fine. They also have PCMCIA cards that contain both USB2 and IEEE1394 (Firewire) ports.
