i have a gift cert to best buy and decided its time to get a dvd burner..

question... when ou backup a dvd will it still play in 5.1/7.1 surround sound?

and what programs should i use.. from what i have been reading anydvd removes the codes and then i should use a different buring utility to actually burn the dvd ... is there a program that does the css removal so i dont need both programs?

i want the simplest easiest program to use.. i just want to make regular backups of my dvds .. using all the features and keeping the digital 5.1 sound.

    thanks!

    Chris

AnyDVD is a driver that runs in the background fooling your copy prog to think there is no protection. It removes all protections. Best one out there. Two other good progs (free) are Decrypter (the best ripper out there) and DVD shrink.
I prefer Nero. I was never a fan of 1click.
Check out these guides for help:

These will show you have to make full backups.

I agree with binkie7 on the choice of programs. Download DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink they are free and will help you learn how to burn. The quides were given in binkie's response. If you want to purchase a program the go with slysoft's AnyDVD and CloneDVD the price you pay for the two programs is reasonable and the support good, and CloneDVD is very versatile. My two cents.

An excellent combo in my opinion is use DVD shrink, ANYDVD and Nero to burn directly to disk. DVD shrink does have CSS removal but is not as up to date as anydvd. Basicaly pop in your dvd analyze with DVD shrink. The choose which pieces of the dvd you don't want(I.E. Why would you want the actors to speak chinese if you don't understand it! This also helps keep the quality of the picture by not compressing the data as much). Then click Backup and choose between burning straight to disk or putting it directly to the hard drive (choose straight to disk, it's easier to me. Let me know if you need more on this part.)Also select a folder to use as a middleman to hold your DVD's data so you can burn it, then hit OK.
It will the go to an encoding screen, let it do its thing and when it's done it will automatically eject the disk, insert your blank media and when it's done you have (in most cases) a perfect copy of your DVD. Also to burn multiple copies of the same subject, open your favorite burning software (Nero in my case) and select that middleman foler you used earlier, select and add all the files to the burning rom and simply burn.
P.S. I never paid a cent for these softwares and this system works like a gem.

You can dl AnyDVD and CloneDVD on a 21 day free trial basis, it is the whole program. DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are free. There are guides on the programs and burning here

Also if you are buying retail then get Verbatim, Maxell, Fuji or Sony disks all are quality.

THanks to all of you! i just backed-up Hide and Seek.. flawless! (well i havent watched the whole thing yet.. but i am going to soon)

the programs you suggested all worked great... i burned at 4x and it took about 45 min from the start of dvdshrink to the end of the burn... not bad i got the verbatim discs that look like reel to reels seem to work nicely!

thanks again! you all were a great help!

Good deal. I use supermediastore.com all the time. The few extra minutes it takes to burn at 4x is worth it.
