For a standard player you need to convert and author as DVD video. avi itself doesn't support menus anyway, .divx which is an extension to avi does, however I don't think any current hardware supports divx menus yet.

For a standard DVD player your best bet would be VCD or SVCD. It might also be possible to use miniDVD or X(S)VCD (non standard resolutions, bitrates, mp3 audio, etc.).

nero burning rom will convert and burn VCD/SVCD. Open nero burning rom. When the 'new compilation' window pops up, select 'CD' and scroll down the left side to 'Video CD' (VCD) or 'Super Video CD' (SVCD) use the 'Menu' tab to create + Customise the menu. when you have finished, click new and choose the file(s) that you want to convert. click burn and you can modify menu or burn settings etc. click burn and it [bold] will automaticly convert to vcd [/bold]
    hope that helps
