    I have tried to shrink movies longer than 120mins and it won't work. Do I have to buy the the dvd r DL's? or is there another way?

    How long are the movies that you are trying to backup? If a movie is longer than 3 hours, then there is a pretty good chance that you'll need DL media. If you're using DVD Shrink or CloneDVD, change the target size to 4300.
