What caused you to format your hard drive? Sounds like you might have some other problems going on that where not cleared up by the format.

Every DVD writer has a manufacture. We have to figure out what yours is and go from there.

Go into Device Manager. Delete (remove) the drive from there. Reboot. Windows will see the drive as new hardware and install the drivers. See if that helps.

    Let's try System File Checker.

Go to Start > Run > type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). Note there is a space between the sfc and /

Have you Windows CD handy as it will ask for it.

Ok. I checked your firmware and it is out of date. The latest version is 2.5

    You can get it here:

    http://www.accesstek.com.tw/_english/3_service/02_fw.php

Scroll down the page until you find the right model number. Download the file and there should be instructions inside the zip file.

Post back and let me know if it helps.

Did you upgrade to XP since you've had the burner?

You may have a problem with trying to update this drive. When you first installed the drive under Win98, the correct firmware was used. According to the directions you supplied, you may not be able to use this dirve under XP.

XP only has Virtual DOS and not real DOS.

I can give you directions on how to run the file under Virtual DOS, but it may not work and could make the drive totally useless. On the other hand, if it does work it should restore your drive to normal.

    The choice is yours.

The other option is to replace the drive with a new one. Drives are now very cheap (a good one costs less than $40). I could recommend some drives, if interested.

To run the command to install the firmware, follow the directions below.

1> Extract the contents of the zip file to you C:\ drive. After you've completed the task, the files can be deleted. You want to put them at the root of the drive so the commands make it easy to find.
2> Go to Start > Run. Type "cmd" (without the quotes).
3> You should have a screen (window) that looks like this:

Where dolphin is the name of your computer.

4> The next step is to get to the basic command prompt. Type "cd C:\" (without the quotes). You may have to enter is a couple of time until it switches. Pictured is the desired result.

    5> Next, type the following EXACTLY: C:\dvflash dv2.bin /f
6> You should get a message of some type if it is successful or not.
    7> Reboot the computer.
8> Test the drive to see if there is any difference.

As for a new drive, I would recommend a BenQ DW 1650. They can be purchased from Newegg and come in black and biege. Both models are under $40 with shipping. http://www.newegg.com/
