Hey I did what ya said. Configure the two computers through my linksys router for internet and file sharing. It worked fine. Now I reinstalled on the secondary comp and ever since then that comp cant access my main one to share files. I also have a third one here im fixing and the third one cant access my main one either. What gives? Plz help.!! My main one can access all files on the other two, but not vica versa through the router. Its a linksys wrt54g
Hey ozzy214! Networking 101: everthing has got to be just-so. File & printer sharing enabled; same Workgroup; DHCP enabled (router assigned); lots of bebooting sometimes involved; firewalls involved; WinXP issues. Using XP, right? If you go Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View you can select, under Files and Folders, to have Windows automatically search for network files and folders. This is a good thing probably for what you're trying to do. Cables? Beware the Crossover cable, it won't work. (It shouldn't. But sometimes they do...) Sometimes it takes a long time for other PCs to appear on the 'Entire Network', one of those little Windows Mysteries. Be methodical, work the checklist, and you'll get them all hooked up ;^) Regards
Ogs I dont get it. The second comp can see the first one fine, but not access its files. The first one can see the second and access its files. I did have this working before through the router, but not it dont. How would I know if something is a crossover cable? I did work all the checklists. The guest account on the first one is enabled. Dhcp is enabled in the router. Netbios over tc/ip is enabled. The only thing I cant check is local security polcies since they both are running windows xp home. What gives? Also firewalls in xp are both turned off. The only firewall is in the router. Grrr:> Okay this is the weird part I just figured out. The secondary comp can see the first in the wrokgroup, but the reason the first is unaccessible is cause the network path aint found. What gives?
Don't worry about that, disable it; we're not logging-on here like Guest Users in a Domain. WinXP uses 'simple file sharing'. This is a godsend for most, and simplifies the whole sharing experience better than Win2K (no logging-on as Client for Microsoft Networks, etc.) Open a command prompt on each PC (a MS-DOS window) and type IPCONFIG The router (your gateway) should be, whatever, something like 192.168.1.1 and your NIC within your own PC should have been assigned something on the same network, ie. 192.168.1.xxx If each PC is getting DHCP, well then you have OS issues. You check sharing, firewalls and don't forget to actually be sharing something, a folder on each PC. You ping guys by address, ping the router, ping the others. 'ping 192.168.1.xxx' Then you ping 'em by Name (computer name), and see if it is getting resolved (translated) into the IP address :^) Great! If they are seeing each other that's sweet, your network is functioning. You now have only some file-access issues, a more minor matter, you will solve them. Yes, this is a good thing when you are behind a router - it's simply another thing to be DHCP assigned by the router. Take special care to make sure it is set to 'DHCP assigned' and not 'enabled' on each PC. It is, however, a security threat for any PC that hooks up directly to broadband, and should always be disabled on that connection. Anyway ozzy, make sure your hardware is solid, troubleshoot the configuration & settings (the network topology) incl. all PC hardware and then, troubleshoot the software, the OS. If you're seeing other PCs in your LAN then you're almost done! Just get the sharing sorted out ;^) L8R
Well all fixed...thanks ogs. You right on the last part. A fresh install did the trick and thus I lost 6 uncompressed dvds and some other shit cause I picked the wrong drive letter to install windows lol. (I have two 80 in raid and one 120 drive) So I assuming the os was corrupt or the registry cause scannow didnt work. Only fresh install. Damn how did bill gates make millions when his software is so goddamn buggy ya have to reinstall every month you want to change something..lol.:>
