Please bare with me, My uncle calls his ,supposedly savy nephew, who knows about computers. Everytime he plays his favorite game on his computer, Bejewled 2, this pops up......."Your computer has 47 errors, to fix this problem go to www.e/Regfix.com". I went to the site and its a company selling a product. I tried a few things with him to get rid of it, but of course nothing worked....their goes a good christmas gift. Well I know you guys can help me on this one. Remember he is my uncle and he is 67 old, I must do something simple. If worst comes to worst he can send for me to come to New York lol. I know their is something I can run to clean it out, the problem is I don't know what. I don't want to do a system restore unless I have to.

    Hi there,

#1- I think WebRoot SpySweeper is one of the best crap remover.
    Popups, Spam blabla blabla blabla.

    But it's not free...

SpyBot - Search and Destroy v1.4
    was released not long ago.

    http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

#2- You are 102% in the wrong forum :)

Tell your uncle you were riding your bike, fell on your head, and totaly forgot how computers work !

Well people ask me computer questions, I play stupid, else you end up being their personal technician, that takes calls sunday morning at 8h00am. No more man, NO MORE :)

BTW, tell your uncle to say away from Warez and Porn sites, he won't get infected :)

The best advise I can give to keep from getting hijacked is DUMP I.E.
Get a different browswer like mozilla, firefox etc.

at the time i reinstalled winME said it was a while ago, i use norton internet security and not had a problem since...

could do the obvious and empty the internet folder...

    @dickeyjay,

First, you'll need to use "fire fox" instead of Internet Explore. Secondly, you'll need to get these useful tools i.e. popups and adware destroyer.

"Ad-Aware SE Personal" from lavasoft, it's free and highly recommended.
"Microsoft AntiSpyware" from Microsoft, it's free and good
"SpyBot - Search & Destroy 1.4" another free and good spy remover
"CCleaner or CrapCleaner" another good tool to have - it's free
"TweakNow RegCleaner" again, it's free and good to have

Your last resource will be http://www.iamnotageek.com - go here, download "HiJackThis" and post it there, or ask them geek support, they're pretty knowledgeable about this stuff. I go there once in a while whenever I'm clueless to rid of something aka trojans, adwares or virus found in my system. Hope this help you out and good lucks.

Hey thanks everyone. Well this is what I had done before I wrote the thread, I had him to down load Mozilla and I had him down load Spybot and check for problems. He is now using Mozilla which is what I use. Spybot did not get it done. Needless to say how long those download and install procedures took.............he's 67. I sent him the CCleaner software. I am trying to find Adware SE. I think once we smash the hijacker, he want have the problem again, since he using Mozilla.
    I will keep you updated.

You can go to www.panicware.com to get a free popup blocker which has always worked for me. Look all over the site and you will find a small link that says free version its on the main page usually very small as they want you to buy it etc. This program isnt crippled or ends in 30 days etc it always works and I never get popups goodluck.

Mozilla has it's own popup blocker, you dont need that panicware program.

I had a similiar problem about a year ago. What I finally had to do was go into msconfig < startup < disable all < reboot < go back into msconfig < startup < then write down all the programs that were still enabled. I then googled all these and found I had a trojan and was able to find an uninstaller. Enabled all again, problem solved. Sounds like a royal pain but really wasn't too bad. Worth a try.

"Cool Web Search" is the one that got me a couple years ago.I kept getting spyware killer popups, and when I clicked on my I.E. my start page had been changed.
I posted my problem on the Lavasoft adaware support site. They had me run Hijackthis, then post the log, and they found the problem, and fixed it in minutes.
Then I was told to go mozilla, or firefox, and I havent had a problem since.I still have Internet Explorer but I only use it when I have to.

    Good link ddp:)

Your right about mozilla im using it right now. But maybe this question asker doesnt want to switch from netscape or ahem explorer maybe he likes Microsoft. I dont but you know some people get used to their browser and dont want to switch no matter what. POPUPs are gay and people who make them should burn in hell. Can I say hell here? I think everyone should make a point to never buy anything from anyone who uses popups or any other kind of spam. Even if its interesting and you want it. Take back control over your internet experience.

    spam pisses me off!

Hell no hell is not tolerated :) Personally I really like my SBC Yahoo DSL browser, free popup blocker, anti-virus, anti-spy, spam blocker, and billpay. I also have adaware SE and spybot-search & destroy.

Wow you like your isp? I have comcast and dont really have a choice they have the worst customer service and really dont care one bit about their TV and internet customers. But because they own washington and we dont really have any competition we have to take it up the tail pipe! Yeah sure I can get DSL for like $10 cheaper but who wants 720K DL when I have 4mb now with cable. Comcast is as bad as living with your inlaws forever!
Comcast could filter spam and protect us from virus's but they dont care one bit so they do nothing. Im not even sure they know the term spam? Most of their customer service people are non tech oriented and cannot do anything past their text screens. Its so bad they blame microsoft for any problems with their cable internet and simply hangup. If you call and complain they will change the name on your bill to an obscenity, believe me I know and have the cable bills to prove it.

I agree with Jim dandy about his spyware adaware removal and browsers.
I heard weebroot spysweeper is not as neat and cool as a lotta people think. There is a back door to this program where they load you up with additional spyware, so stay away from that crapy program. ed
