Has anybody tried this instead of slax, I found this out before when trying to get the key from a hitachi 79FL.

NOTE: you must be using an xbox 360 to power the drive.

Unplug the xbox with the tray opened fully (so it stays opened when it's off)

Plug the xbox back in and press eject to power it on

The drive should close a bit and open again and your hitachi is then in mode-b

Someone give it a try and let me know if it works for them too.

if it's already flashed it works. that's the way I've done it. simply just open the tray, then unplug the power cord with the tray open plug the powerback on and then power on with the eject button. If it works you'll have the push eject button twice for it to open, your in mode B

So it only works if it's flashed? Yeah even when the tray is closed (pressed twice to close) it still displays close tray on the xbox even though the disc is spinning at 12x and you have to press eject again then it reads the disc.

I wasn't sure if it worked with stock firmware.

EDIT: since you have a hitachi does yours read backups properly without skipping on spin up? If so what discs verbs?

yeah it only works once it's flashed, once it's flashed you drive will be back to normal so you push eject once it'll open i'm not sure if that's what you meant. Hitachi's are very picky when it come to reading back ups, but i use verbatim made in singapore and never had problems. now what is it that your trying to do? did you already flash you drive and it's not ready back ups properly? or you haven't flashed it? reason I ask was because you were asking about mode b.

No it works it's just fussy at spinning up discs I just accidently put it in mode b doing the eject thing and wondered why it happens.

it's probably not reading the discs you can replace the laser or get a new drive same model and switch the boards.

It reads originals perfect, it reads backups perfect, it makes a skipping noise once or twice before or during spin-up on certain backups but the ones it does it on no matter how many copies you burn it still does it on them, but same with the ones it doesn't do it on, all the copies of that don't do it. It happens to all hitachi's I've came across but the first 79FL didn't do it with Ritek 2.4x for all copies. I'm not sure about singapore verbs until I find out if the one I tested was made in singapore.

But since then i've used ridata, mirror, aone etc. and they all do it with certain backups.

No problem. I usually use JungleFlasher to put it in mode B but I found that out one day.
