I have a Gateway Laptop Model: MX6455 that came with a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N Burner. My question pertains to the fact that currently my burner takes like 2 hours to read a disc to my hard drive and 2 hours 2 burn to disc, but when I 1st got this computer it use to take only at a maximum of 30 minutes or so do do these processes.

    Example:
Say I want to burn a DVD full of information to send to a friend, at a 4x burn setting when I 1st got the computer it would take Nero 7 Ultra Edition or CD Burner XP Pro 3 approoximately 30 minutes, but now at the same 4x speed it is taking close to 2 hours.

My 1st thought to solve this issue was the fact the burning softwares had a glitch to an update from Microsoft/other software therefore I unistalled them both and reinstalled them fresh to my computer with no change to the fact that the drive was still seemed to read/burn slower than when I 1st bought the computer.

I have even tried looking for the latest Firmware for HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N Burner and have found some forums telling me that this DVD drive is an LG, but have not found any Firmware at LG's website.

If anyone can explain why all of a sudden this particular drive started taking more time to do its normal functions that by all means explain it to me!!

I have been having similar problems with suddenly reduced ripping/burning speeds on several systems, all up to date XP, all recent DL DVD RW drives, which ripped & burned at normal rated speeds until recently when 0.8x or less seems to be all you can get with dvd decrypter or anything. I understand about drive settings and DMA, but what incenses me is that this problem may be some sort of copy protection scheme that damages the drive settings.
Any firmware that attempts to reduce rip speeds should not affect burning speeds. Are firmware revisions to eliminate any rip lock features generic, or device specific?

While in DMA mode, your saying it takes 4 hours to read and burn a DVD? Does you HDD have plenty of free space? How you cleaned out your HDD lately. Clean out the browser cashe. Delete all uneccesary files. Run a registry cleaner. Run Disc Cleanup (compress all old files). Run Disc Defragmenter. Use 16X speed Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blank media. You can safely burn at half the speed rating of the media. If it's 16X, burn at 8X. Make sure your burner firmware is updated. Can you copy from DVD to DVD faster? What type of files are you copying? If your using DVD DECRYPTER, get rid of it and download the new version. DVDFAB HD DECRYPTER. Here's the link. Also, try using the DVDFAB PLATINUM, this is a full feature program. Rips, transcodes, compresses, and burners. Very user friendly. Has a 30 day free trial. http://club.cdfreaks.com/f116/dvdfab-4-0-3-2-out-235014/ So why bother with firmware updates? Typically, they offer everything from feature and performance enhancements to bug fixes and support for a wider variety of media.
The biggest reason why firmware should be kept current is media: As media becomes more available, support for it is implemented in the firmware. The firmware determines the best parameters for a piece of media, and then continually monitors the burn process to ensure the quality of the burn.
